In tonight’s episode, we got to see a whole new side of Elena as she turned off her humanity and embraced her wilder, more carefree side. She joined the cheerleaders and gave her friends some hard truths, and we have to admit some of them were a long time coming! And of course she had a snack or two in between. The question remains, is the new Elena too much for her friends to handle? It seems like Damon is the only one who’s happy with this change.

Next week’s episode “Because the Night” will give us some new insight into Damon’s past, as we flash back to his time in New York City. While in present day Elena and Damon visit the city, in flashbacks we’ll learn about Damon’s previously unknown history with Lexi.

The official description for “Because the Night” reads:

FLASHBACK TO DAMON’S LIFE IN 1970s NEW YORK / THE BAND DEAD SARA PERFORMS — Realizing that Elena (Nina Dobrev) needs some time away from Mystic Falls, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) takes her to New York City, where he lived and partied hard in the 1970s. When Rebekah (Claire Holt) also shows up in New York, she’s impressed with Elena’s secret agenda. Flashbacks reveal Damon’s hedonistic life in the underground club scene and a complicated encounter with Lexi (guest star Arielle Kebbel). Meanwhile, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) try to convince Klaus (Joseph Morgan) that it would be in his own best interest to help them track Silas down, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) struggles to keep her grasp on reality and do the right thing.

The Vampire Diaries 4×17 “Because the Night” airs next Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
