2014 was a fantastic year for movies. Here are our picks for the top 25 films of 2014.

It’s the end of the year, which means now is the time when every film critic posts their top 10 movies of the year list, but that’s boring.

Even more so than most years, 2014 was a year that deserves a list longer than the standard 10 movies. Even cutting this list down to 25 films was a challenge, and I think the movies that I’ve yet to see would have a very difficult time making the cut due to how great 2014 was overall. I love every film that I’ve included, and it’s likely we won’t have a year full of as many great movies for some time.

Sadly, there are a number of films I haven’t been able to see yet due the fact that, like many of you, my living location only allows for me to see most films when they hit wide release. Most notably, I was sad to have to finalize this list before seeing Inherent Vice from Paul Thomas Anderson, a personal favorite director. Another film that I’m almost certain would have made the list if I’d been able to see it is Ava DuVernay’s Selma. Others that I’ve not seen include The Imitation Game, Foxcatcher, Into the Woods, Unbroken, Mr. Turner, Wild, Still Alice, Big Eyes, The Homesman, and Love is Strange, though I expect many of those listed films would have an exceedingly difficult time making the cut.

This style of video list is, of course, inspired by David Ehrlich’s end of the year video montages of which I’m a huge fan. If you haven’t yet seen his video this year, make sure to head over to Little White Lies and check it out. He calls making these videos “a blast to cut together and also just an unspeakably catastrophic waste of time,” and I have to say I agree. I started editing together this video in October. It was a lot of work, but hopefully you’ll find it was worth it.

What do you think are the best movies of 2014?
