The Tomorrow People‘s third episode “Girl, Interrupted” shed light on Cara’s backstory as Stephen continued to face divided loyalties. Read on for a recap and beware of spoilers!

The episode begins with a flashback to five years ago when mute Cara (Peyton List) is at a school dance and goes off with a popular boy to the woods. The boy tries to push Cara beyond her comfort level and she takes off as he tries to hurt here. She is able to propel him back with her powers and passes out. The Tomorrow People returns to present day where Cara is unnerved and hears thoughts on the subway.

Astrid (Madeleine Mantock) and Stephen (Robbie Amell) are at a party where Stephen shows off his questionable dance skills. Stephen overhears the thoughts of a fellow outcast Emily who is planning her death in her head.

Meanwhile Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino) removes a breakout’s powers instead of killing him. Meanwhile the Tomorrow People want Stephen to hook up their computer Tim to Ultra’s so that they can monitor breakouts. Cara refuses to help Stephen’s friend Emily as she does not want to intervene in human affairs or help them.

Stephen is forced to take off his shirt, showing his ripped body, for biometrics by Agent Darcy Nicholls. She is trying to teach him to control his powers by using his emotions. Using Cara’s telepathic help, Stephen breaks into the restricted section to get to the computer’s mainframe. Cara’s ability to read people’s minds tends to overwhelm her as she gets surrounding noise, letting Stephen get caught by Jedikiah.

Stephen reaches out to Jedikiah to get his advice on Emily with no luck. Once Stephen leaves, Jedikiah orders a sweep of Ultra’s headquarters as he is still suspicious of his nephew. Stephen lies to John (Luke Mitchell) about Cara’s help as she confesses that she was overwhelmed.

In another flashback, Cara is under arrest for murder of Tyler, the boy who attempted to rape her, and frantically signs to her father who vows to protect her. Using her newly discovered powers Cara teleports out of jail back home.

Astrid approves of Stephen trying to help Emily while John probes Cara into telling him what’s wrong with no luck. Emily refuses Astrid and Stephen’s help and feels guilty over her sister’s death. Emily was behind the wheel driving her sister when a train hit the car and killed her sister.

Stephen faces off with Cara and John over wanting to help Emily as Cara does not think humans are worth saving. After an alert from Ultra’s mainframe, the Tomorrow People rush off to help a breakout in the industrial port area of town. It turns out to be a setup and Ultra agent Darcy is the ruse. As Russell (Aaron Yoo) and John fight Ultra agents, Darcy transports Cara back to headquarters.

John blames himself for letting Cara go up as it is the five year anniversary of the attempted rape. Stephen goes to Ultra where Jedikiah confronts him about the flash-drive without any new answers. Jedikiah threatens to kill Cara although he is impressed by her telepathic abilities.

Stephen asks him to save Cara’s life and take away her powers framing it as a way to impact John. Stephen states that John will not love her anymore if she’s human. As Stephen tries to inject Cara she pleads for him to kill her instead. No luck as he still injects her.

On the subway ride home, it is revealed that Stephen stopped time and injected her with saline instead. Good save. John and Cara share a tender moment as he’s glad to see her while Astrid calls Stephen frantic over Emily’s disappearance. Stephen figures out that Emily is planning on being hit by a train and rushes to save her. Cara offers to help in order to save Stephen from exposing himself and his powers. Cara talks Emily down from suicide while Astrid looks on bewildered by the Tomorrow People’s abilities.

Emily returns home and is embraced by her parents as Cara and Stephen look on. Cara shares her memory of her father telling her to leave to have a life and thinking that he would be better off without her with her sister looking on. Not a great way to remember your father. Do you think it means something that Cara shared this with Stephen and not John?

Stephen tries to convince Cara that they are meant to use their abilities to help others rather than hide. Astrid confronts Stephen about his powers as he lies to her face. She decides to be proactive and research, creating conflict between the best friends.
