This week’s episode of The Tomorrow People, entitled “Thanatos,” revealed more of the relationship between Jedikiah and John as well as the history behind Ultra.

In an opening flashback, we see Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino) try to talk John (Luke Mitchell) out of being the first test subject in the experiment that would allow him to kill. It looks like the two had quite a bond. The flashback wakes Jedikiah Price up as if from a nightmare, as his buddy Morgan tries to comfort him and seems to have a deep connection, actually being able to get inside his head.

The episode’s title “Thanatos” is the word that Stephen’s (Robbie Amell) dad whispered to him as he almost drowned. Apparently Ultra is hiding something about the program. Cara (Peyton List) wants to get into Jedikiah’s head at home and Russell (Aaron Yoo) backs her up. John worries about the danger but Stephen presses on as he wants to find his father.

Cara and Russell break in while Stephen impersonates a security guard. Cara gets inside Jedikiah’s head only to see a memory of John and Jedikiah after the experiment. Jedikiah wakes up and Cara teleports just in time, but Russell is caught as Jedikiah disables his ability to teleport. The two engage in hand-to-hand combat and Russell is able to teleport away, bringing Jedikiah with him. As Jedikiah looks at the Tomorrow People’s lair, he is promptly knocked out.

The team debates about what to do with Jedikiah with Cara wanting to interrogate him using her powers. Remember, he thinks she no longer has powers. Stephen rushes back to Ultra with a cold blue while Jedikiah tells them that Thanatos simply means death. Cara is not able to read his mind due to his ability to block telepaths.

Jedikiah tells John that it is an advantage for both of them to get him out of the headquarters. Apparently there is more to John’s history besides his ability to kill. In a flashback we see Jedikiah make John kill someone to ensure that he is capable of it. John moves to kill him only to find out that it was just a test.

Cara relates the memory she saw, telling John that Jedikiah loved him as a son. Meanwhile, back at Ultra, they know Jedikiah is missing and they’re tracking the telepathic signal using teleports.

Stephen is introduced to the Founder, who was also the voice in the mansion. He reveals that Stephen’s father was also one of the founders of Ultra. Stephen tries to get Cara to let Jedikiah go, but she thinks that there is something in Morgan, who he is trying to keep secret. Stephen brings this up to Ultra and they get a team to pursue her.

Cara takes out her anger on Jedikiah by using him as a punching bag as he pokes at her personal history. Cara still believes that John is hiding something about his time with Jedikiah.

In a flashback, Jedikiah tells John to kill his trainer, who is now a threat. Apparently John is the only one with the required skills. It is unclear if it is Killian McCrane (Logan Dohring) or perhaps Stephen’s father at this point.

Stephen apprehends Morgan just in time to find out that she is in love with Jedikiah. As the task force trashes her apartment, Stephen lets her go.

Russell and Cara interrogate Jedikiah about his relationship with Morgan. As Stephen looks on in the control room, Jedikiah reveals that Thanatos is a nickname for Dr. Aldus Crick, a former Princeton professor. Apparently Crick oversaw research and experimentation at Ultra that was extremely dangerous. He’s now an outlaw from Ultra due to the death rate of his experiments.

Irene volunteers to come along due to her MIT physics degree. The Founder is unhappy with the current tracking of Jedikiah and the lack of apprehension of Morgan, even killing a telepath. It seems like he is also a Tomorrow Person, as he uses his skills to assist in the hunt.

Crick is played by Nicholas Young, the original John on the British series. He explains the beginning of Ultra to John, Irene, and Stephen and blames Jedikiah’s jealousy of Stephen’s father as the downfall of the organization. Apparently Stephen’s father could also stop time. Crick believes that it is impossible to stop time and teleport, although Stephen disagrees.

Jedikiah tries to get to Russell by questioning John’s leadership skills. Jedikiah almost kills Russell, causing Cara to teleport and reveal that she still has powers. Meanwhile, the Founder discerns that Jedikiah is being held in a subway station.

John takes Jedikiah and a gun away from the station to avoid Ultra’s infiltration. In yet another flashback we see John’s assignment where he was instructed to kill his mentor, aka Stephen’s father. He teleported out of his burning car, only to meet with John and a gun. Stephen’s father says he was protecting their kind as John shoots him point blank.

Back in present day, John tells Jedikiah that he lost everything that day. John shoots a round around him, serving to scare Jedikiah. John asserts his independence and is unable to teleport away as the Ultra team comes in. Ultra takes him in, but not before a fight. As John is taken in, we see a flashback where John apologizes to Stephen’s father and promises to protect his son and others like them.

What did you think of the episode? Were you surprised that John killed Stephen’s father? Do you think he’s really dead?
