Stephen King’s The Stand adaptation has found its charismatic and sinister villain Randall Flagg in actor Alexander Skarsgard.

Turns out there’s something about the Skarsgård family that just makes them prone to being cast as villains.

While Stellan Skarsgård has been known for a lighter role here and there — most notably as Bill Anderson in the delightful Mamma Mia!, he’s also been recently cast as the villain Vladimir Harkonnen in Dennis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune adaptation. His son Bill Skarsgård has just spent the last few years terrifying children and adults everywhere as Pennywise the Clown in IT and IT: Chapter 2.

Now it looks like it’s Alexander Skarsgård’s turn to be a villain in a novel-to-film adaptation.

Collider revealed this morning that Alexander Skarsgård has been cast as the villainous Randall Flagg in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand for CBS All Access.

Alexander Skarsgård is, of course, no stranger to playing the villain having played Perry White, Nicole Kidman’s abusive husband, in Big Little Lies — a role which won him the Emmy for best Supporting Actor.

The announcement of Skarsgård in the role of Randall Flagg comes on the heels of quite a few other casting announcements made this morning when Stephen King was on The View this morning promoting his new book, The Institute, and his new movie, It: Chapter Two.

Announced this morning on The View were Jovan Adepo (The Leftovers) as Larry Underwood, Owen Teague (Bloodline) as Harold Lauder, Brad William Henke (Orange Is the New Black) as Tom Cullen, Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me) as Cobb and Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail.

They will join the previously announced James Marsden as Stu Redman, Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as Nick Andros.

The 10-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic will be co-written by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and Ben Cavell (SEAL Team), with Stephen King himself writing the series’ 10th and final episode — which will include a new ‘coda’ that wasn’t part of the original 1978 novel.

King himself has written the series’ 10th and final episode, which will include a new “coda” to the story that wasn’t part of his original 1978 novel.

The Stand will debut on CBS All Access in 2020.
