Glen Mazzara, who just finished his final season as show runner for The Walking Dead, is now in talks to write The Overlook Hotel, a The Shining prequel.

Mazzara is currently in talks to write The Overlook Hotel, a film set to tell what happened before the events in the 1980 horror film The Shining. The prequel is being developed by Warner Bros and will be produced by Mythology Entertainment’s Bradley Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis, according to Deadline.

That is, of course, if Stephen King will allow it. In talking with Entertainment Weekly about a The Shining prequel, the author revealed that he isn’t pleased. Warner Bros released Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 version of The Shining, but King has doubts over whether or not they even have the rights to make a prequel.

In September 2013, King is releasing Doctor Sleep, his own sequel to The Shining. King explained the complication saying, “There’s a real question about whether or not they have the rights to ‘Before the Play,’ which was the prologue cut from the book — because the epilogue to the book was called ‘After the Play.’ So they were bookends.”

He also added that the cut section was particularly scary, and would actually make a good movie, in his opinion. But that doesn’t mean he wants to see it made. “Am I eager to see that happen? No I am not,” said King. “There’s some real question about what rights Warner Bros. does still have. The Shining is such an old book now that the copyright comes back to me. Arguably, the film rights lapse — so we’ll see. We’re looking into that.”

While King is questioning Warner Bros.’ rights to make a prequel, the studio is confident that they do.
