The young adult category of books has become the ultimate feeding ground for Hollywood. A week doesn’t go by without a novel being optioned for film or TV. The big question is which of your favorites will make it?

Thanks to The Hunger Games and soon to be filmed Divergent, dystopian is the genre of the moment. The small screen is getting in on the action with two novels being sent to pilot, The Selection and Delirium. Each novel has a fandom but which will make the better TV show?

Delirium was optioned back in 2009 but it is only now being sent to pilot. Lauren Oliver’s novel builds a dystopian world around something everyone can understand LOVE. Boys and girls are kept separate for fear they will catch the deliria before they can be cured. An electric fence separates the cities from the wilds, a place where uncureds live. Raids are conducted randomly to assure no one is breaking the rules and if you are thought to be a sympathizer you are dealt with. All of these things are done to prevent love, to protect the human race. At the beginning of each chapter is a type of propaganda that highlights how love is seen as a disease and dangerous. As a television show, Delirium has some room to grow and can take viewers into a world where something so fundamental as love is the enemy.

The Selection which was optioned by The CW, is headed into its second pilot. The first pilot was done for the fall season but not picked up. The Selection by Kiera Cass was released last spring and tells the story of America Singer a girl chosen to compete is a Bachelor like contest to win the heart of a prince. The only problem is America’s heart belongs to Aspen, a boy who is in a caste below her. Originally billed as the Bachelor meets The Hunger Games, The Selection has a new life and word from the CW is that the second coming is fantastic.

The question is is there enough room on the small screen for two dystopian young adult adaptations? Each has something different to offer. The Selection  is definitely The CW’s demographic and has the appeal with its sorted romance and scheming. On the book side of things The Selection series only has one book released with the second book, The Elite, releasing on April 23. There is also a novella releasing March 5, focusing on Prince Maxon.  As for Delirium, the series is ending on March 5 when Requiem releases. The Delirium series has three full length novels and several novellas exploring tertiary characters. While Delirium deals with love it also has more of the dystopian vibe people are used to, rebels, bad government, which makes it more appealing to a broader audience. Delirium was optioned by Fox whose current roster of shows consists of reality TV like American Idol and procedurals like Bones and The Following. The only show on Fox that is geared specifically towards a younger crowd is Glee.

So which, if either adaptation will make the cut? Which one you do most want to see or are you a fan of both?
