Kiera Cass’ best-selling YA novel The Selection will be getting a movie adaptation that will premiere on Netflix!

According to Variety, Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour will direct Netflix’s upcoming film The Selection, which will be based on the first book in Kiera Cass’ popular YA series.

Producer Denise Di Novi released a statement about The Selection adaptation, saying that “we are thrilled to be working with Netflix and bringing these beloved books to life for the extraordinarily loyal and passionate fan base.” She continues, “The author Kiera Cass has created a spellbinding fantasy whose message of empowerment and authenticity is more relevant today than ever.”

Di Novi and Divergent franchise’s Pouya Shahbazian will produce, while Margaret French Isaac will serve as executive producer.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the brilliant Haifaa Al-Mansour and our friends at Netflix on this special film,” Shahbazian said. “Having worked on some very high profile book adaptations, I’ve never before seen the fervor and passion that The Selection fans have for the adaptation of Kiera Cass’ book series to film.”

First published in 2012, The Selection is set in a dystopian future where 35 girls are selected to move to a royal palace and compete for a prince’s heart.

America Singer is from the society’s lower class and chosen as one of Prince Maxon’s suitors, but she’s torn between the life and love she left behind. Over time, she grows strong feelings for the prince.

The Selection is the first in a five-book series and has sold more than 11 million copies around the world.

It’s been a long road to adaptation for The Selection. The book was initially tapped to be a CW show, with first Aimee Teegarden of Friday Night Lights fame tapped for lead character America Singer, then with Yael Grobglas — now Petra of Jane of the Virgin — as the lead character when that first pilot was rejected.

Both CW shows failed to come to fruition, and the rights to the book lay dormant until 2016, when Variety reported that the rights for a film directed by Me Before You director Thea Sharrock had been picked up by Warner Bros.

However, that film version also failed to pick up steam. However, it looks like Netflix is now well on its way to bringing an adaptation of The Selection to TV screens nationwide!
