Rick Riordan has given us the cover for the latest Percy Jackson and the Olympians book to get made into a graphic novel: The Sea of Monsters.

He revealed the cover on his Tumblr.

Annabeth, Percy, and Tyson are at the forefront of the image, all armed and facing various monsters from the book. At the very center is the cyclops Polyphemus, the main antagonist in the novel.

We also see the Colchis Bulls, which are made of bronze, have burning skin, and breathe fire. They attacked Camp Half Blood upon Percy’s return. In the sky, we see a flock of Stymphalian birds, which have Celestial Bronze beaks and feathers that they can shoot at their enemies. These attacked the camp during a chariot race.

Behind Polyphemus is the hydra, which has the ability to spew acid, breathe fire, and can grow back two heads for each one that is cut off. The group meets one of these when Tyson accidentally stumbles upon a Monster Doughnut shop, which is a chain of stores tied to the hydra’s life force.

Lastly, we see a Laistrygonian Giant on the right-hand side. He appears to be holding a dodgeball in his hand, which harkens back to the scene in the beginning of the book when a group of them attack Percy at his school during gym class.

The graphic novel was adapted by Robert Venditti and the art was done by Atilla Futaki, both of whom had worked on The Lightning Thief graphic novel. For Sea of Monsters, Tamás Gáspár replaced José Villarrubia as the person in charge of color.

The graphic novel will be released on July 2, 2013.

We’re really excited about this cover and think that it is far and away better than the first one. What do you think? What’s your favorite part?
