After a landslide box office victory for The Purge last weekend, Blumhouse Productions and Universal Picture have announced The Purge 2 is coming soon.

Blumhouse tweeted yesterday, “The Purge 2 is in development @UniversalHorror #ThePurge,” on the heels of a huge money-making weekend for the original horror film.

The film took in $34.1 million at the box office, beating out previous top spot holder, Fast & Furious 6, as well as newcomers, The Internship and Now You See Me.

This news comes as no surprise, especially from the company that has brought us 4 Paranormal Activity movies.

The Purge greatly outperformed Blumhouse’s last release, Dark Skies, which only took in a little over $17 million over all.  The Ethan Hawke thriller more than made back its budget estimated at a minuscule $3 million.

Deadline  is also reporting that the sequel was randomly selected as a winner of the California Tax Credit TV/Film Production Lottery.

The program, which took effect in 2009, provides incentive for film and television productions to shoot in the state of California.

There is no word yet on whether writer and director James DeMonaco will return for the proposed sequel, nor have any production details been released.

The futuristic thriller depicts a new American society where the government legalizes any and all crime for a period of 12 hours. We follow the Sandin family as they do whatever it takes to stay alive in the face of sinister intruders.

We will stay on the lookout for more information on the sequel, which seems like it will come sooner rather than later.

The Purge is now in theaters and stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey.
