MTV has posted an early look at the September 2 New York Times Bestselling list to show off The Perks of Being a Wallflower hitting #1 on the children’s paperback list. Perks first hit the list back in June at the #3 spot.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky was first published in 1999 and was recently adapted into a film by Summit Entertainment. The novel is told through Charlie’s point of view. He is a boy on the fringes who is trying to find his way onto the dance floor. This is the story of what it’s like to grow up in high school. Charlie writes letters to a unknown person and the story unfolds as Charlie tries to figure out if he should live life or run from it.

The book is loaded with references to well-known books by Ayn Rand, Jack Kerouac and Albert Camus, which his English teacher introduces him to. There is also significant references to music and movies, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Charlie experiences many missteps as enters the world of first dates, family drama and new friends.

The movie was adapted and directed by Stephen Chbosky, so it is safe to assume that the film will stay fairly close to the source material. In a recent interview with Hollywood.com Chbosky said, “It really is, as cliché as it sounds, a dream come true. I’ve wanted to make this movie — I first thought of the title of the movie twenty years ago this fall.” He states that he always hoped Perks would make it the big screen. When asked why he wanted Emma Watson as Sam, Chbosky says that she is luminous, approachable and fragile but in a  beautiful sort of way.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is set to release on September 21 with an all-star cast including Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev. The film is rated PG-13.
