Though there’s no official word on a The Perfectionists season 2 renewal, we are hopeful that after the intense and revealing season 1 finale, our returning Liars and the Perfectionists will continue to embark on this journey.

The Perfectionists season 1 was spent setting up the mystery for the future of the show, and despite this, it still managed to provide a thrilling, interesting, and thoughtful story. It doesn’t help that the series waited until the finale to reveal the new villain and their plan for our favorite characters.

With only 10 episodes, we definitely didn’t get enough story out of Alison, Mona, Taylor, and the Perfectionists, and the finale left us craving more. Here’s everything we know about, and what we want, from The Perfectionists season 2.

‘The Perfectionists’ season 2 premiere date

Unfortunately, we are still waiting to hear if The Perfectionists has officially been renewed or cancelled. However, the creator, I. Marlene King, is optimistic about the future of the show, as she stated in an interview after The Perfectionists season 1 finale aired on May 22, 2019.

In this interview, when asked about news of a season 2 renewal, she stated: “I think it’s likely, and we’ll hear about that in the next couple of weeks. Bryan Holdman — one of our original lifetime PLL writers, who’s going to be joining us on staff — and I are going in to pitch our loose version of Season 2 to the network next week.”

What can we expect to see in ‘The Perfectionists’ season 2?

After the villainous reveal of The Professor on The Perfectionists season 1, episode 10, there will be psychological warfare on The Perfectionists season 2 as phase two of The Professor’s experiment commences.

Mona has blackmailed her way back onto BHU’s faculty with the revelation that Claire Hotchkiss and Mason Gregory, Nolan’s best friend, slept together in the wake of Nolan’s murder. Plus, her confession to The Professor that her deepest fear is dying before she finds out who the villain is will certainly make her the #1 target as she’s the most volatile of the group (aside from maybe Taylor, but she’s missed out on this reveal).

Alison has changed her major from English to Psychology, which we also discovered was tied in with a seemingly nefarious plan from BHU’s Dr. Fielder. What exactly has Alison gotten herself in to? That’s surely going to be the primary focus of her story, as she’s now changed her entire future with this one decision.

(However, I have to say that Alison going into psychology seems much more fitting for her than English ever did. It could give her the ability to help people in the way she’s craving, in order to make up for how terrible she was as a teenager.)

As for the Perfectionists, Ava, Dylan, and Caitlin have all confessed their secrets and taken steps toward changing their future. Ava letting go of her father and his money allows her to move forward without an enormous weight on her shoulders. Dylan will have to face his past in the form of Luke, his high school bully, who confessed his sexuality and told Dylan he wouldn’t leave until Dylan forgave him. Gross.

I’m expecting flashbacks of Dylan’s time in high school, plus more romance than before as Dylan will not only have one love interest in Andrew, but another in Luke, and dealing with boys will certainly be his main focus (because, let’s face it, Dylan is the least involved with this new villain and mystery).

Caitlin has convinced her mothers to let her stay in Beacon Heights, despite their protests to the contrary, and she has to figure out how to keep her future in tact with a stalker attempting to tear it away from her. Plus, knowing that Jeremy isn’t guilty and has now been framed for Nolan’s murder is certainly going to be on the forefront of her mind, but will she focus on herself or on freeing him? There are two paths that Caitlin could take, and honestly, I hope her focus doesn’t fall solely on Jeremy.

As for Taylor, the bonus scene during the finale (seen below) allowed her to finally say goodbye to Nolan while resting at the retreat her mother shipped her off to. It’s hard to know what’s next for Taylor because she could either come back rested or she could come back further unhinged than before, but her closure with Nolan will drive her forward. Additionally, Taylor was left out of the reveal of The Professor AKA Nolan’s real killer, so she’ll have to find her way into the circle once more.

‘The Perfectionists’ season 2 wishlist

After seeing the dynamics between the characters on The Perfectionists season 1, most of my wishlist for The Perfectionists season 2 is just more exploration of the relationships between the characters.

Mona and Alison

As I wrote about before, Mona and Alison have such a complicated history from Pretty Little Liars (stretching back over a decade of their lives) that needs to be explored and touched upon if we’re ever to believe they can become true best friends, like the Liars.

I want to see these two come together in the same way the Liars did; faced with an enemy seeking to take them down, their friendship is what can hold them together, plus Mona and Alison have been through so much that it would make such delicious drama to see them address their past.

Taylor included

Taylor was the odd one out of the group during the first 10 episodes, which makes sense because she wasn’t around for half of the season. Going into The Perfectionists season 2, we absolutely need to see Taylor as more of a main character because she holds the key to so many of the show’s mysteries, whether she knows it or not.

Taylor created Beacon Guard, which means she is their best bet to bring it down, plus she knows how her mother operates. Pair that with her dramatic backstory of her father and brother being murdered and Taylor is a dynamic character on the series just waiting to be developed. Plus, her relationships with Alison and Mona are so interesting, and they’ve all been “dead” before, so they share something very unusual in common.

Make the Perfectionists… interesting

Honestly, Ava and Dylan were the worst parts of season 1, in my opinion, because their stories were so limiting. Seeing Dylan off galavanting with Andrew in almost every episode or in despair when Andrew wasn’t around was incredibly dull, quickly making Dylan my least favorite character and my first vote for a main character that the series should kill off.

Ava has much more potential than Dylan at this point, but it’s being wasted in a relationship that doesn’t really make sense now that she’s returned her dad’s stolen money. Zach was the catalyst for her making that decision, but he’s too boring for Ava. Also, the many flashbacks of Ava and Nolan were exhausting, and the last thing Ava needed was two love interests.

She has the most interesting backstory of the Perfectionists, but it’s not being used… all she did was yell at Dana, get drunk over Nolan, and start flirting with Zach. At least, that’s all I can easily remember.

Caitlin was the most interesting of the new characters, but she failed to resonate with a lot of fans. Caitlin really didn’t need to be in a relationship with Jeremy this season, as it was mainly a distraction from the rest of the mess in her life, and I’d like to see her single and determined to put an end to The Professor’s experiment next season. Caitlin is very similar to Spencer, and she was the best character out of the Liars, so I see Caitlin following a similar path.

Psychological warfare

Now that the villain has been introduced and their plan is in action, The Perfectionists season 2 has the potential to get so much darker than Pretty Little Liars ever did, which is absolutely necessary to establish itself as a must-watch spin-off series.

The tone of the first season felt very reminiscent of the first season of Pretty Little Liars, but with Freeform’s lifted restraints, there’s an opportunity to do more than just be a series making people nostalgic for the original show. Go darker, kill more characters, and put real effort into completely destroying the mental state of these characters as they are, essentially, hunted by this new villain.

Theories about ‘The Professor’

Honestly, I have no idea who The Professor could be at this time. I have a few ideas for how they could fit into Beacon Heights, but it’s more than likely that the actual character who is “The Professor” has not been introduced yet (as Cece Drake/Charlotte DiLaurentis wasn’t introduced until Pretty Little Liars season 6).

Connections to the Hotchkiss family

I have two ideas for how this person could be connected to the Hotchkiss family. First, as we saw when Mona explored Beacon Guard, the Hotchkiss family were input as the first members of Beacon Guard (BH1, 2, 3, and 5). However, BH4 was noticeably missing. It wouldn’t make sense, considering Taylor created Beacon Guard, for her to put some random person in before her younger brother, as Nolan was BH5.

Many have suspected Nolan may have a twin out in the world, which would not be shocking considering the history of this universe. However, I believe there’s just another long-lost Hotchkiss sibling that Taylor will reveal in the future, or maybe Taylor has the twin. It’s possible that this person could be The Professor, and that’s why Taylor was not present at the Crimson Society meeting on The Perfectionists season 1, episode 10 because they purposefully waited until she was out of town.

Second, The Professor could be primarily focused on a character that isn’t in the group: Claire Hotchkiss.

I mean, there has to be a reason why Claire’s husband and son were murdered and why her daughter was almost killed by someone before she faked her death. The only connection between these people is Claire and their family name, and Claire is the most prominent member of the family (and seems like she always has been).

While this experiment is targeting Alison, Mona, and the Perfectionists now, this could just be the test run before Claire is psychologically tormented. This could tie back to my above theory about another sibling that Claire exiled from the family for some reason coming back for revenge. (Sounds a bit like Charlotte, which is why I think it’s definitely possible.)
