T.M. Frazier is one of those authors that can rip your heart out with her novels and you’ll keep coming back for more. By now, I’ve come to expect to fall in love with her characters and also being an emotional mess. Her stories are gripping, addicting, and show how love can blossom even in the darkest of times.
The Outskirts was a bit easier on my heart than some of her previous novels, while still being just as exciting and intriguing.
With Sawyer just going out into the world for the first time, after living in a cult-like church, the book very much feels like a coming of age story. But at the same time, it has darker themes with a lot of questions about what really happened with Sawyer’s parents.
Not only is Sawyer trying to discover who she is, now that she’s free from the crushing tyranny of her father, but she’s also trying to figure out how her mother connects to the small town that she escaped to. With only a letter and a deed of land, Sawyer has very little information to go off of.
Sawyer also wants to do all of the things she never got to do before, like get her first job, start reading more, have fun, and figure out why she has such a pull to her neighbor. They don’t have the best first impression of one another, but the more they get to know each other, the harder it is for them to stay apart.
Finn may think that he’s going to spend the rest of his days alone, but that all changes when he meets Sawyer. After everything he went through with his ex, he’s a bit broken on the inside and has gotten used to being alone.
That doesn’t stop his protective instincts from wanting to help Sawyer out, though. Especially when he finds out just how conditioned she is to dealing with others hurting her.
With both trying desperately to put their dark pasts behind them, Sawyer and Finn find a bit of happiness in each other. Sawyer learns what it’s like to fall in love, and Finn discovers that maybe he didn’t know what love was like at all until he met Sawyer.
It’s a good thing that the author decided to write this book a sequel because I was not ready to let this story go by the time the ending rolled around. There’s still a lot more to learn about Finn, Sawyer, and the rest of her family. I can’t wait to get my greedy little hands on The Outliers.
