The Originals season 3 began with a prophecy. It’s about time we start trying to figure out how to outsmart this thing, huh?

The Prophecy

First of all, we should probably refresh ourselves as to what that prophecy actually said. The prophecy made its debut in The Originals season 3, episode 2, “You Hung the Moon,” and it predicted that the Mikaelson ‘Always and Forever’ trio will die, “One by friend, one by foe, and one by family.”

Check out the clip where Freya checks out the prophecy for herself courtesy of Klaus’ blood:

That all important ‘by family’ part

The death we all were most concerned with was the one committed by family, but thanks to Rebekah’s clever thinking, that ‘death’ is all but taken care of. Elijah daggered his sister in the winter finale, essentially killing her, which eliminates that part of the prophecy altogether. Now, Elijah and Klaus need only concern themselves with those outside the family.

Klaus and Elijah trusting each other has always been a risky business. Elijah is probably the most trustworthy member of the Mikaelson family, but, thanks to Klaus’ repeated betrayals of said family, the two have never been able to fully depend on the loyalty of the other.

Now that Elijah knows that the family portion of the prophecy has been handled, he can fully trust Klaus. The Original hybrid brother may not know about the fulfillment of that portion of the prophecy just yet, but as long as Elijah can trust Klaus, that’s a very big step in the right direction.

Now, as for those other two parts of the prophecy…

The Mikaelsons have no shortage of enemies, so that part of the prophecy is pretty self explanatory. They will have to keep all their wits about them if they are to defend themselves against the influx of enemies in the Quarter, especially now.

It’s the ‘by friend’ portion that most concerns us now. The current friends of the Mikaelson clan are a small number: Marcel, Jackson, Camille, in some ways, Will Kinney. That’s about it. The rest, including Hayley and Freya either classify as foe or family. Now, this ‘friend’ foretold by the prophecy could be an old friend that returns to their lives, but otherwise we must keep our eyes peeled for treachery from many of the very characters we’ve grown to love the most.

The Originals season 3 returns tomorrow night at 9 p.m. EST on the CW following The Vampire Diaries.
