The holidays are never kind to the Mikaelsons. They may have sneaked in a brief, delightful moment in tonight’s episode, but as per usual, happiness doesn’t last long on The Originals.

There’s one lesson we should all have learned by now: when the Christmas carols start playing on The Originals or The Vampire Diaries, turn off the episode. Absolutely nothing good comes while a carol is playing. That theme rings true tonight.

Read on for all the details from tonight’s downright heartbreaking episode and make sure to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below.

‘The Originals’ season 3, episode 9 recap

Klaus and Cami

Klaus refuses to leave Cami’s side throughout the entirety of this episode. Maybe it was because of the close calls with Aurora, maybe it was because he knows she could have suffered dearly at Lucien’s hand, or maybe it’s just because he’s happy to have her back under his protection.

Klaus gives a beautiful speech tonight to Detective Kinney, which all started with one of our most favorite lines we’ve heard on The Originals: “There is beauty in the courage of the fragile fighter.” He reminds Kinney that despite how dark things seem now, they will get better. He compels him a bit, basically to counteract the compulsion that Lucien had him under, but he ultimately leaves the man with a heart full of hope. You can see how Klaus’ tender treatment of Detective Kinney touches Cami’s heart, and if he hadn’t gotten interrupted, we may have seen her kiss him right then and there.

The end of the episode brings us our absolutes — our absolute favorite and absolute least favorite moments in the history of Klamille. Klaus finds Cami out on the balcony, and they have a touching conversation about the fact that what is important to her is important to him. He wants nothing more than to give her exactly what she wants and to make her happy. They kiss and cuddle together, and we wept with tears of joy.

Then, Aurora’s playing of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” begins, and we wish we would have shut the damn TV off. While they cuddled, Cami must have heard a noise because she turns a bit in Klaus’ arms. The look on her face does not bode well for what will come next. Moments later, Klaus stirs awake and shifts, only to see his hand covered in blood. Cami lies limp in his arms, her neck and chest crisscrossed in her blood. The fury and terror in Klaus’ eyes in that moment speaks volumes for his emotional state.

Rebekah’s trip to crazy town

Courtesy of the cursed dagger, Rebekah awakes to unquenchable levels of thirst and rage, as well as a mark on her wrist. Freya puts her health and life on the line to cure her sister, but isn’t successful right away. Watching Rebekah rip into Hayley, both physically and emotionally, was incredibly tough to watch. Freya eventually succeeded in removing the mark on Rebekah’s wrist and quelling the crazy, but unfortunately it wasn’t permanent.

Elijah and Rebekah embrace the prophecy

When Rebekah feels herself losing control in the taxi on the way to the airport, she looks down to see that the mark has returned. Instead of returning to the Mikaelson compound, she messages Elijah to meet her in a private place. He finds her, and she explains the mark’s return.

Rebekah then instigates one of the smartest moves yet. Instead of trying to fight the prophecy, she suggests they embrace it. She begs Elijah to dagger her, forcing her to fall at the hands of family, thereby leaving him and Klaus to the ‘friend’ and ‘foe’ sides of the prophecy. She will be unable to hurt anyone, and he will know from here on out that he can trust Klaus implicitly, as the ‘family’ third of the prophecy has now been fulfilled. He reluctantly does it, and she crumples in his arms.

Keep in mind…
