‘The Originals’ season 2, episode 8 recap

Klaus hosts his brothers, Kol and Finn, for dinner, complete with magic blocking shackles, and asks them for their loyalty. When Finn lets loose that Esther has been searching for Rebekah all this time, Elijah loses his cool and feeds on his eldest brother.

A quick pow-wow between Klaus and Elijah shows that, although Klaus wants to go to his child to protect her now that Esther found Rebekah, it is more important that they shore up support for their cause. Klaus sends Elijah to protect Hope and Rebekah while he stays behind to convince them to work with him.

In the bayou, Jackson insists that Aiden set up a meeting between himself and the other wolves.

Davina comes to tell Marcel about Kol and the White Oak Stake, but he cuts her off mid confession and tells her that he delivered Kol to Klaus. He tells her to stick with Josh for protection, and that he is going to go see Klaus and help.

Marcel drags Kol into another room and begins threatening him if he ever gets near Davina again. Kol knows that Klaus needs him, so he feels that these are no more than empty threats. Kol propositions Marcel with the one thing he has trouble refusing: power. If only Marcel could trust Kol…

Klaus returns Finn, still shackled, to the stairwell, and leaves him there to think over his proposal.

In the bayou, Hayley learns that an ancient practice of marrying two wolves with the help of a shaman can impart the abilities of one line to another. For centuries, all wolves have had the same powers, but now that Hayley is a hybrid that can change at will, she can pass that power on if she enters into such a marriage. She is on board to marry Jackson and free the wolves from their dependency on the rings, and therefore Esther, but Jackson then drops the bomb that they have to honor those vows for life in order for the magic to remain in effect. When he asks her if she’s ready for that, she balks.

Cami awakes quite groggy, and Hayley asks her for access to her closet of witchy fun. Hayley lets Cami in on the werewolf magic-wedding thing, and Cami says that Hayley has to decide what is right for herself. If she can enter into this marriage wholeheartedly then great, but it must be her choice. Cami throws her hair back in a pony during their discussion and Hayley notices a series of puncture marks down Cami’s spine.

Josh brings Aiden into the loft, and Davina takes to him instantly. She leaves to order food, and Aiden lets Josh in on the meeting planned for that night. After some time, they KISS (yes!), and then shout for Davina to return, but she has taken off to Kol’s secret tomb of witchy objects. She concocts a potion and drinks it, but it’s purpose is a mystery.

Marcel is having fun torturing Kol, but Klaus stops him before any permanent damage can be done. Kol accuses Klaus of caring more for Marcel than him, and Klaus doesn’t dismiss his fears. Instead, he offers to prove that he values him.

Klaus returns to free Finn, but instead of accepting his freedom, Finn tells him of their mother’s barren womb and her deal with her more powerful older sister for the ability to bear more children. He tells Klaus that if Hope had survived, Dahlia would have come for her per the agreement Esther made eons ago. If anyone stood in her way, Dahlia would destroy them all.

In a diner outside of town, Elijah meets up with Rebekah and Hope. Rebekah tells him of how Hope makes her wish she could be human again and have a family of her own. Elijah talks of Esther’s plan to make them all mortal, and how he considered it. Rebekah leaves to change Hope’s diaper after noticing blood smears on Elijah’s sleeve, and stumbles into a mess of bodies in the kitchen.

Jackson is trying to reason with the wolves, and is getting nowhere. Hayley shows up, and after a really cool hand transformation tells them that she doesn’t need a ring to control her shifting, and that if they want that ability they should shut up and listen to what Jackson has to say.

Davina is ready to kick a little ass, so she snaps Marcel’s neck and tosses Klaus across a room. When Davina has the gall to mention Mikael’s name, Klaus snaps and feeds on her. As soon as her blood enters his mouth, he passes out in pain.

Kol is impressed by her work on Klaus, but Marcel awakes and tells her that Kol is now on their side of Esther’s war. She still hates Klaus more than anyone. Cami enters and tells them about her puncture wounds and how they are a part of an ancient spell.

Hayley lets all the wolves in on her newest plan. Jackson doesn’t seem to believe that she is willing to marry him and do what is best for the pack, but she puts his doubts to rest. Aiden is the first to ditch his ring in solidarity, hoping others will join.

Kol lets Cami in on the horrible truth that the puncture marks are a sign that Esther prepared her body to be hosted by another spirit, probably Esther herself. Cami goes to Vincent and slaps him across the face. Finn tells her that Esther was preparing her body for Rebekah to inhabit.

Cami is ready to start this fight, and has to ask Davina to put her hatred for Klaus aside so they can defeat Esther.

Klaus talks to Kol, to reassure him that the monster that Esther has become is not the mother they once knew. He takes a call from Rebekah, and learns of Elijah’s peculiar behavior, and that she snapped his neck. He tells her a cryptic spot for them to rendez-vous, and goes to Finn to punish him. He locks him in a coffin (with a few air holes). Hayley arrives to tell Klaus and Elijah of her betrothal to Jackson, but hastens to join him when he invites her to see Hope.
