‘The Originals’ season 2, episode 12, ‘Sanctuary,’ recap

Hayley is still hesitant to divulge her secrets because it wouldn’t be safe if she reveals her baby’s survival. She and Jackson have a little chat about how no matter what secrets she has, nothing could change how he feels. Then he mentions that he has a secret that she needs to know about, no matter whether or not they go through with the wedding. It involves her parents and how they died. This is undoubtedly not going to end well. You can mark those words.

Rebekah can feel Freya’s power (especially now that she’s awake) and wants to channel it with Cassie to bust out of their prison. As they walk back toward their rooms, they pass a new girl watching television. We can see that it’s Freya, and her not understanding that the cartoons on televisions are not truly moving paintings makes sense, but Rebekah just passes her off as another witch gone mad.

Davina wakes in Kol’s little tomb/workshop, and he is ready to start working on the dagger to incapacitate Klaus. Just before they are about to start working, Davina checks her phone and sees that she has multiple texts from Aiden, who is worried because Josh and Marcel are both missing.

Finn/Vincent has all of the vampires trapped unconscious, and they are in some sort of pain because he’s a vicious bastard. He wants Marcel’s secrets, and is looking for a way to take them from him.

Murderers and other defecting werewolves are buried in a separate area away from the rest of the pack’s graves. Jackson recently learned that one of his relatives, a radical, was responsible for killing Hayley’s parents. He worried that she would blame him, but Hayley is rational and knows that his ancestor’s sins are not his. Klaus interrupts their little chat and asks for a few words alone with Hayley.

The supervising faction at the witchy insane asylum gets a little upset about the apple Rebekah stole and gave to Freya. Rebekah cannot just sit by and watch them punish the girl, so she jumps in and gets her hand whacked with a fireplace poker. The witch also takes a necklace off Freya’s neck as payment.

Klaus is absolutely incredulous about the fact that Hayley is considering telling Jackson about Hope. He orders her to keep her mouth shut and to cancel the wedding, but Hayley refuses to blindly obey Klaus’ decrees. She is Hope’s mother after all.

Davina brings Aiden to Kol’s little secret clubhouse and uses some of Josh’s belongings and a locator spell to find him. She discovers that he is at the bodega that Esther was using when she was inhabiting Lenore’s body as a witch.

The witch in charge at the asylum is drawn toward a door that creaks open. As she approaches, she is pulled forcefully inside.

Hayley refuses to let Klaus bully her into letting him make any and all decisions regarding what is best for her or Hope, especially since his family is what keeps threatening her life. Hayley reminds him that everyone coming after Hope is only doing so because of him. She implores him to trust her judgement in a tender moment, and he takes advantage of her and snaps her neck.

Vincent has Marcel awake and tied to a chair with vervain ropes. Vincent knows Klaus has a secret that he is protecting fiercely, and he believes that Marcel knows what it is. Marcel doesn’t have anything to tell him, and so Vincent continues to torture him.

Klaus returns to the elder’s house to talk to Jackson. As soon as Jackson steps out of the safety of her roof, Klaus yanks Jackson into the woods and plans to execute him. Klaus begins beating him, and they talk about what Klaus thinks Jackson wants out of this marriage and how Jackson was Ansel’s star pupil. Don’t look now, but we think Klaus is a little jealous of Jackson.

Kol marches right into Finn’s little interrogation of Marcel, and they argue over who Kol is most loyal to. Kol tells Finn about the dagger he is trying to make to put Klaus down, and Finn tells him that he wants to kill Klaus, not put him to sleep. Then, Kol tells Finn that he has Davina Claire, a harvest girl, wrapped around his little finger, and that with her by their side, there is nothing they can’t do. Finn needs allies, and Kol comes ready and equipped. Just when we were really starting to like you, Kol.

Rebekah is looking for Cassie to start the spell, and she finds the door to Freya’s casket room open. She finds the body of the dead supervisor. Cassie arrives with the enforcers, ready to take over power. Freya uses her abilities to put them all down, and then she kills Cassie for betraying Rebekah.

With his final breaths, Jackson asks Klaus to promise to help Hayley set the werewolves free. At that exact moment, Hayley jumps into the fray and protects Jackson. Klaus promises Jackson that if he ever betrays Hayley, that he’ll return and put Jackson’s head on a spike.

While Kol is trying to distract Finn, Davina and Aiden are sneaking in the back to save Josh. Finn is not fooled in the slightest, however, and he wakes all the hungry vampires surrounding the witch and the werewolf. Aiden snaps Josh’s neck to make an escape route and gets Davina out of there.

Freya marches straight out of the asylum with Rebekah at her heels, and she finally tells Rebekah who she is. She undoes the spell and tells Rebekah to let Klaus, Elijah, Kol, and Finn know that she will be coming for them soon, and they should be on their best behavior.

Finn is incredibly angry with Kol for not giving their mother what she asked for in return for them returning to the world as witches. Finn curses Kol, giving him a few days to wrap up his affairs before death will take him away.

Hayley starts telling Jackson the story of a beautiful baby girl and the parents that promised to do everything to protect her. We think we’re more anxious to see Jackson’s reaction to the news that Hope is alive than pretty much anyone else.

Klaus has plans to kill Jackson after the marriage is complete and the wolves are changed. Finn puts the pieces together when he learns that Marcel was compelled to forget what happened to Hope, and he is now well aware that Hope is alive. He wants Marcel and the vampires to help him find her.
