The Originals returned to our screens with a bang as Klaus learned some terrifying truths about what Marcel and Rebekah were up to many years ago. Elijah then has to act as he sees fit, and we are all left to wonder what is next for the Original siblings.

A family separated by more than just walls

The werewolf venom running through Rebekah’s veins reminds her of all the deaths she saw while working in the sanitorium all those years ago. She finds her way outside and believes she is free when Genevieve appears, stabs her with a stake and drags her back inside. We then see poor Klaus, who appears to be in a constant state of suffering.

Elsewhere, we see that Sophie is literally taking Monique’s place in the crypt. Elijah crashes the party and demands to know where Rebekah and Klaus are being kept. Monique performs a spell that burns names into Elijah’s skin like tattoos. She tells Elijah to “follow the path she left behind” regarding the names now appearing on his upper body.

Back in the sanitorium, Genevieve begins working a mortar and pestle on some herbs, adding a little of her own blood and Rebekah’s, then sets the mixture aside. She reminds Rebekah of how they used to be friends, and we get a flashback to their first encounter.

From the start, both knew the other’s role in the supernatural world, and neither held it against the other. We are also given a glimpse of Genevieve’s unnamed friend, who Rebekah invites to join them out on the town after their long day of nursing is over.

Solving a puzzle to beat the ticking clock…

Elijah arrives back home and calls for Hayley. He removes his shirt, revealing names being written all over his upper body. Elijah requests that she copy down the names. He believes they list every person Celeste has inhabited over the years, and that whatever puzzle they represent must be solved in order for Elijah to find Klaus & Rebekah.

Genevieve cuts Klaus open from under his rib cage down his torso, sticking her hand in his body, and removing Papa Tunde’s dagger that had embedded itself there. At first it appeared that she wanted to cause him pain, but Genevieve reveals that she wants to enlighten Klaus to Rebekah’s betrayal from years ago. She has him drink the mixture she concocted from blood and herbs, and it links Klaus’ mind to Rebekah’s. He will now see the memories his sister relives.

Time then flashes back to show Marcel and Rebekah meeting privately in a room of dead influenza victims. They need Genevieve to perform the spell to summon Mikael, but it seems that Rebekah is having second thoughts. That doubt is soon put to rest though as she declares her intentions to be with Marcel forever.

Meanwhile, Elijah & Marcel discover that one of the names was a woman who committed suicide in the place where Elijah & Celeste first kissed. Elijah calls Hayley to fill her in on their discovery, and she mentions that Brynn Devereaux is on the list, and if Brynne’s body was housing Celeste’s spirit at the time, Celeste may be able to remove the curse on Hayley’s clan.

Marcel and Elijah crash into a local bar known as The Pit and threaten a human into giving them the location of the death records for every supernatural creature that dies in the Quarter. They use that resource to trace the names on Elijah’s body faster. They learn that all the names on Elijah’s body are people that took their own lives while being possessed by Celeste, except for Clara Summerland, who died of influenza. When Elijah says this, all of the names disappear, indicating that Clara holds the secret of where Klaus and Rebekah are being kept.

Secrets revealed

Genevieve tells Rebekah that she has linked her mind to Klaus’ and every memory that she relives is shared with her brother. Rebekah panics and begs her to stop. Genevieve then tells Klaus that Rebekah & Marcel conspired to rid themselves of him for good and starts a song on a grammaphone to trigger the memory she needs him to see.

The song takes Rebekah back to a club in the 20’s where we see Genevieve’s unnamed friend order a drink (Clara Summerland perhaps?) and have an encounter with Elijah. She is left quite smitten with his handkerchief in hand. Rebekah tells Genevieve that she wants to contact Mikael. After watching this scene unfold, Klaus responds by admitting that no matter what horrors the Mikaelson family members have committed against each other, he believes Rebekah would never stoop low enough as to call Mikael.

Elijah arrives back at the homestead and whispers to Hayley that he found out something about Brynne Devereaux, but is interrupted by Marcel before he can tell her his findings. They discover that Clara was a nurse at the Fleur-de-lys sanitarium, and Marcel begins pacing distractedly. Elijah picks up on his behavior and asks what he knows. Marcel tells them that Klaus and Rebekah are at the sanitorium, and then tells Elijah what he and Rebekah did.

Genevieve shows Klaus more proof of Rebekah’s betrayal, as the two lovebirds, Marcel and Rebekah, meet with Genevieve to conduct a spell, the spell to retrieve Mikael. The witch utilizes Mikael’s knife, which Klaus describes as an item he was once wrongly punished for stealing. He then believes Genevieve’s story and becomes rageful with Rebekah.

Elijah is angry with Marcel after he is told about the monstrous betrayal. Marcel tells Elijah that he truly loves Rebekah and that they need to get to Klaus before he learns the truth. We all know that that ship has sailed, but poor Marcel doesn’t know that yet.

Celeste believes that the Mikaelson family dynamic will be destroyed now, as Klaus will kill Marcel in revenge, enraging Rebekah, and ultimately pitting brother against brother. We then see Genevieve and her friend together at the sanitorium, and a flash shows Celeste’s face, revealing that she was inhabiting that body at the time.

Rebekah then begs Genevieve to undo the spell that called Mikael, and seems truly scared of what she has done. Genevieve tells her that it can’t be undone, then proposes telling Klaus the truth and begging for forgiveness. Rebekah declares that that is not a possibility. Genevieve calls Rebekah out on using her and Rebekah forces her to breathe in through an infected cloth, effectively killing her. Rebekah then infects Clara with the same cloth, and compels the orderlies to keep the girls in quarantine until they die.

A time for revenge
Genevieve then tells Klaus that he can take THEIR revenge now, and offers up her wrist for him to feed on to gather up his strength for what he must do next. She releases his restraints and gives him Papa Tunde’s knife. He turns it on her, but does not use it against her, and walks out of the room.

Elijah and Marcel arrive at the sanitorium just as Klaus finds Rebekah. He then begins hunting her as she limps down the hallway. We get a short scene as Celeste leaves the building, only to be hit over the head by Hayley.

Rebekah corners herself in the basement, and Klaus arrives to use Papa Tunde’s knife against her. He expects Rebekah to beg for mercy or forgiveness, but she refuses. Marcel jumps into the room, diverting Klaus’ attention for a moment as he promises to kill him. Elijah arrives just in time to stab Klaus with Papa Tunde’s knife. Elijah instructs the betrayers to run as fast and as far as they can, and he cradles his brother as he falls limply to the floor.
