‘The Originals’ season 3, episode 18, ‘The Devil Comes Here and Sighs’ review

Let’s start with Davina and Kol, shall we?

The Originals’ ill-fated lovers found a loophole to the torment that Kol has been struggling with since he returned to the land of the living. It seems that the St. James is not just a magic-free zone, but a curse-free one as well. He could breathe easier and enjoy a moment of peace with his lady-love. Swoon.

Then Vincent was accosted by Van Nguyen in the cemetery. Vincent was only there to speak to the ancestors and insist that they stop brandishing him like a weapon and allow him to take back his power and his life. They basically told him, “Well, no.” Van Nguyen was given the power of Regent right there and then. He used said power to enact a spell repelling the boundaries placed on the St. James. Kol began to feel the effects of the curse as his thirst returned. Davina ran off to help Vincent and by channeling each other’s power, were able to repel Van Nguyen’s spell. The St. James is still magic-free.

We are definitely with Davina and Vincent on the whole ‘putting the ancestors down for good’ thing. They have been interfering in the matters of the living with no conscience. They create monster after monster to take down the Mikaelsons and refuse to see that they have become the scourge they have fought against. If the ancestors’ power remains in play after this season, the Mikaelsons should really invest in some way to block them entirely.

Let’s get back to the story. In order to keep Davina safe, Marcel convinced Kol to leave New Orleans and get out of the reach of the ancestors. Kol heeds Marcel’s advice and leaves town, only to learn that leaving means desiccation and probable death. He crawls back to New Orleans city limits and the thirst overtakes him once again. Kol is truly good and trapped.

Shall we move on to Freya and Elijah?

Freya is working on a way to defeat Lucien with sigil magic. This is definitely a new frontier in the wonderful world of magic, so maybe, just maybe, it will work. When Freya and Elijah confront Lucien and she enacts her spell, he is tormented and in serious pain… for a few minutes.

It seems that the ancestors are repelling every spell Freya can throw at their new beastie. She even tries to rip his heart from his chest, but no dice. When Elijah sees that they are beat, he hightails it out of there with his sister in hand. Best to live to fight another day, and we couldn’t agree more. There has to be a way to kill or neutralize Lucien, Freya just needs time to find it.

Last, but certainly never least…

Ah, Aurora. How we haven’t missed thy craziness. Although, it must be said that she is definitely never boring. She and Klaus have a bit of a heart to heart, which Lucien will see later via candid camera. It seems that she intends to use Lucien to get back her dear old brother and then rebut his attempts to woo her. That’s gonna go over well.

Anyway, Cami and Hayley cook up a pretty ingenious plan to save Klaus. They basically let Aurora think she’s won as they both attack and fail to kill the redhead. Hayley remains a heap on the floor even after reviving, and Cami keeps the focus on herself. While Aurora enjoys torturing both Cami and Klaus, Hayley bides her time for the perfect moment. When it arrives, Hayley overpowers Aurora while Cami sinks a syringe into her neck, subduing the little minx without killing her and enacting the potion that runs through her system.

And how about that ending?

Freya will be working to find something to counteract the serum that has turned Lucien and potentially Aurora into Super-Originals. She better work quickly, though, because they may need to cook up a cure for Lucien’s bite before that.

Lucien is soundly pissed off that Cami and Hayley found a way to save Klaus from his clutches. So pissed, in fact, that he comes after Cami. He discovers and kills the neighbor she had her apartment’s deed/lease signed by, and waltzes into her safehouse. As Cami’s look of horror dawns, Lucien enters her apartment and sinks his fangs into her neck. We have no idea how long Cami has to live, as she is no Original, but Freya will have to work fast to stop the spread of the most deadly bite in the history of the supernatural.

Do you think Freya will find a cure to Lucien’s bite in time?
