Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne star as immortals on a mission in Netflix’s adaptation of the popular graphic novel The Old Guard.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández — with Rucka adapting the film’s script from his own work — and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond the Pines), The Old Guard is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.

Led by a warrior named Andy, The Old Guard is a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries.

But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde, Mad Mad: Fury Road) stars as Andy, with Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk, Native Son) as new recruit Nile. Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Luca Marinelli star as the rest of Andy’s team, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Harry Melling among those pursuing them.

When speaking to EW about The Old Guard, Kiki Layne expressed her admiration for the film, saying that “these types of films — especially action films of this size — usually follow a male character, and there are female characters, but they’re just kind of orbiting around whatever his story is. This film [has] the ability to carry two very strong female stories.”

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood added that “they are warriors. [I wanted] to be able to reframe what it means to be a female with this film and make that a normal thing: our toughness and badassness and courage. To normalize that was really important to me.”

The Old Guard will premiere on Netflix on July 10th.
