The Office will not only be available to stream on Peacock in 2021, it may also be headed for that long rumored/gestating reboot.

Hot on the heels of the announcements for both a Battlestar Galactica reboot and a Saved by the Bell revival, NBCU streamer Peacock has also revealed that it is their “hope and goal” to get going on a reboot of The Office.

Of course, the rumors of a reboot of The Office have been circulating so long that it’s become a running joke by now, but with NBCU acquiring the rights for The Office in 2021, it seems that those rumors now have a stronger foundation under them.

Regarding the potential for a reboot, NBCU’s Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprise Bonnie Hammer said that, “The Office comes back to us in January 2021. It is my hope that we can figure what that great reboot would be. We are having conversations.”

Certainly an Office reboot would fit into Peacock’s overall strategy for its original scripted series, as Hammer said that Peacock wants “there to be some connective tissue to what we also have in the library.”

That certainly seems to be the case so far, as Sam Esmail’s Battlestar Galactica reboot will run alongside the 2003 Sci Fi Channel series on the streaming service. Likewise, Mike Schur will debut his new comedy Rutherford Falls, which will feature The Office star Ed Helms. This means his new comedy will run alongside The Office, on which he was a writer-producer, and Park and Rec, which he co-created.

Hammer went on to say that The Office may not be the only property with a reboot in store.

We will be looking at all of them down the road and see what makes the most sense,” she went on to say when asked about reboot plans. “When we see what the usage is on the service, if something is popping, and it’s ours, you better believe that we are going to be looking at it as a new original.”

While other cast members from The Office have expressed interest in a reboot, Steve Carrell has expressed his reluctance to return to the Dunder-Mifflin offices and may be tied up for the next few years with his workplace comedy show for Netflix, Space Force, which will be in collaboration with The Office developer Greg Daniels.
