The CW is looking to bring Nicholas Sparks’ popular novel The Notebook to the small screen.

Update: Speaking at the Television Critics Assocation’s summer sessions on Tuesday, CW President Mark Pedowitz offered a couple of additional tidbits about the new Notebook series:

In case Ryan Gosling as Noah and Rachel McAdams starring as Allie wasn’t enough for you in 2004, a new television series at The CW will bring the story back to life, but in a much longer storytelling format.

According to a description for The Notebook TV show provided by EW, “This series will follow the romantic journey of the two beloved central characters Noah and Allie, at the outset of their blossoming relationship as they build their lives and their future together against the backdrop of the racial politics, economic inequities, and social mores of post-World War II of the late 1940s in North Carolina.”

Ideas for the show are still being ironed out, so don’t expect to see The Notebook appearing on TV in the very near future.

With that said, The CW likely realizes that the film adaptation of The Notebook and the novel have gone down as major classics hits, so why not bring this story onto television screens as well?

Those who loved the story by Sparks or the film could be really thrilled by this news. A television series, which has the potential to run for years, could tell much more of Noah and Allie’s story (Babies?).

Some CW followers would argue that the network is in need of a couple new romantic dramas, so The Notebook may be just what they need to get the genre started up again. Plus, it would be a period piece! Speaking of period pieces, one of their newest romantic dramas is Reign, whose third season premieres this October.

We once proclaimed that The Notebook movie was better than the novel by Nicholas Sparks. Do you agree?
