The classic romance film of the early aughts, The Notebook, is getting a new life as a Broadway musical.

We’re in the age of reboots and remakes, and it seems Broadway isn’t immune to the nostalgia wave either, because The Notebook is getting turned into a Broadway musical. The Notebook was originally a novel by Nicholas Sparks and turned into a 2004 film that won the hearts of millennial romantics everywhere.

Variety reports that producers Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch in association with Nicholas Sparks himself are working to bring the modern romance classic into a Broadway musical. The musical will be developed by This Is Us supervising producer Bekah Brunstetter and singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson.

Brunstetter explained to Variety that she wasn’t just excited to be working on bringing this beloved story to the stage, but she was also excited about developing a musical that featured an older couple. “The older you get, it seems, the more invisible you become, and yet, you have SO much to say — so putting an older couple at the forefront of a musical is thrilling to me. I am so excited to continue collaborating with Ingrid on bringing this beautiful story to life in a new way.”

For her part, Michaelson was inspired to write for this musical before she had even secured the job. As she explained to Variety, “The concept of unending devotion and love wrapped up in memory and family is something very close to my own personal life. The story sings to me so perfectly. I actually started writing that very night of the first meeting, before I even had the job!”

With a team that is so passionate about the story and so incredibly talented, we can’t help but be excited about the possibilities for this musical. Because things are still in very early stages, we don’t yet know when the musical will be opening, or who will be bringing Noah and Allie to life onstage. We can’t wait to see how the story is not only adapted for the stage but told through music.

The Notebook is a love story that struck a chord with people from so many different walks of life. It’s exciting to see it get an opportunity to impact a whole new audience as it travels to the stage. Stay tuned here for more news about The Notebook musical as it breaks.
