With the coronation of Brave’s Merida on the horizon to make her the eleventh Disney princess, I thought this would be a good time to talk about the type of person the next Disney princess could be.

I am a huge fan of Disney and greatly support the way they’ve been recently breaking away from stereotypical, traditional trends and given us more out of the box, strong, and contemporary Disney princesses.

There’s Tiana, the first black princess, and Merida, the head-strong, unwilling to back down, doesn’t-need-a-prince-to-be-a-princess princess, who are the most recent examples. In my opinion, Disney did a great job with these movies, (although the story line for Brave was a little lacking) because they portrayed the characters’ strong qualities that make them stand out in different and exciting new ways.

That being said, I have a couple of ideas about who the next Disney princesses could be. We need more princesses who can inspire hope and beauty in viewers even if they’re not so conventional.

The first type comes with two Disney princesses for the price of one. That’s right: A gay princess! (or a lesbian princess, either way). With society having changed so drastically over the past few years on the issue of equality, I think it would be great to show kids (and adults) that there’s nothing wrong with being gay. It would give people the support and encouragement they need to feel like they can accomplish anything… even become a princess. Although it would be very controversial, Disney’s reach expands all over the world and would be a smart and surprising way to inspire millions.

The second idea I had (which seems more realistic right now because it’s not controversial) is having a plus-sized princess. This type of princess is one they could create right now because Disney is all about supporting inner beauty and strength. For proof, here’s their inspiring “I Am a Princess” video released in September 2012:

A plus-sized princess could teach children to appreciate their bodies. As much as Disney tells people to value their inner beauty, they need to show it, and what better way than through a powerful figure such as a princess. One of the issues with the princesses right now is that their bodies are unrealistically tiny, as you can see by many of their frames in this group photo:

I know these ideas are a little far fetched and I doubt Disney has any plans to actually make these ideas come to life in the near future. After all, they just made a black princess and gay-rights are still a widely debated issue. With that said, I have hope that one day the characters could inspire children everywhere.

Would you like to see these Disney princesses in theaters? What other types would you like to see and do you think Disney will ever make them?
