It’s been a long road for the News Night crew, but we can’t help but wonder: Who could The Newsroom series finale synopsis be referring to?

First things first, check out the official synopsis for The Newsroom series finale and find out what all the fuss is about:

“A sudden death leads Will and Mac (Emily Mortimer) to ponder the milestones that transformed the newsroom, and look ahead towards ACN’s uncertain future. Maggie lands a field-producer interview in Washington; Neal’s digital site is shut down for repairs; Leona (Jane Fonda) offers sage advice to Pruit.”

Whoa. Hey. Wait a minute. “A sudden death”? Nothing we had seen or heard prior to this synopsis had even hinted at any significant deaths in the final season, but now we can’t help but wonder who we should be concerned about. Here are the players not mentioned in the final synopsis and why we can’t help but be the slightest bit worried about them.

Charlie Skinner

He seems the most plausible. He’s definitely getting up there in age, and with all the drinking and anger boiling in him, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to imagine him being taken out by a sudden heart attack or something. NOT that we want that to happen; we love Charlie, but it would be the most expected and the least heart-breaking of the cast not mentioned. At least he would have lived a full life.

Jim Harper

Okay, so all we know about The Newsroom season 3, episode 4 is that he and Maggie are going to be trying to get back from an airport in Moscow. What if, somehow, Jim selflessly sends Maggie in a single available seat on a flight, and then the plane he ends up on crashes. It would definitely classify as sudden, and we can see how it would send Mac and Will on a nostalgia tour. We can already hear Will talking about how he didn’t even like him at the beginning.

Sloan Sabbith

We. Would. Be. Devastated. Sloan has been a constant source of fun and light-heartedness since the first moment we met her, and it would be truly tragic if she died in some freak accident. The only reason we think hers is a lot less plausible is that, at this point, separating her and Don would just seem a cruel and mean way to end the show, and the synopsis stipulates “A sudden death,” not multiple deaths.

Don Keefer

The same things we said about Sloan could be said about Don. He may have been a major player in the love triangle early in the series, but his happiness with Sloan is our paramount need for him. We can’t imagine them separated any time soon, and will be heartbroken if either of them are involved in this death business.

Elliot Hirsch

Elliot is Will’s obvious successor if he is forced to step down for any reason, so if something unfortunate were to happen to Elliot, it would definitely trigger all those left behind to remember the work he did before. It wouldn’t be as heartbreaking as some of the other possibilities, but we would not be happy to see him go either.

Reese Lansing

It would probably be the least impactful death of the major possibilities, what with no one being great friends with the Lansing family, but if anyone that you worked with suddenly dropped dead or was hit by a car, it would affect your life. After the first two episodes of The Newsroom season 3, we definitely like the guy, but maybe not enough to be emotionally disturbed by his untimely demise.
