Thanks to Aaron Sorkin we now have a better understanding of what we can expect to see when The Newsroom season 3 hits our screens in November.

We’ve been anxious to hear what we can expect story-wise on The Newsroom season 3, and Sorkin has broken the details drought and finally clued us in as to what the News Night crew will be dealing with in the final six episodes.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sorkin addressed the most important questions looming over Newsroom fans’ heads.

When asked about how much time has passed since season 2, he shared that about five months has passed since the events of the finale, but once the season begins, time will pass much more linearly. There will not be any gaps during the season. The events of one episode will follow directly after the one before.

The main plot of season 3 is not something he wanted to give away directly — he was pretty mum on details — but he did let slip that, “It’s something that we’ve been talking about for the last two years: government and journalism… it involves one of our characters in a lot of jeopardy. Our people have a story that was given to them by a government whistleblower and the Justice Department wants the name of their source and they won’t give it up.”

As far as new characters go, we will meet two half-siblings of Reese’s (from his father’s second marriage) that will own shares of the company and will bring with them a hostile takeover-type of situation. His half-sister will be played by Kat Dennings (of Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and 2 Broke Girls fame), but we were not given a name for the actor playing Reese’s half-brother.

He then went on to give details on a few of the core characters and where we can expect their stories to go in the final six episodes. He shared that there will be a wedding for Mac and Will, but that it hopefully will be a little different from how TV weddings usually go.

Maggie will be moving on from her incredibly difficult arc from last season and trying to put the events of her past behind her. As far as Jim goes, he will still be dating Hallie, but a professional slip up on the ACN twitter account will spell trouble for them both personally and professionally.

He didn’t have anything specific to say about the endings for Neal, Sloan, Don, or Charlie, but he seemed happy with how the series wraps up. When asked whether six episodes was long enough to truly give the series appropriate closure, Sorkin said, “As it turned out, six was the right number. I don’t know what we would have done with a seventh episode.”

What might have started as just an unfortunate scheduling necessity (Sorkin is one busy man these days) may have made for the strongest possible conclusion for the ACN News Night crew. Now we just have to make it to November to see it ourselves.

The Newsroom‘s six episode final season airs on HBO starting November 9, 2014.
