Emily Mortimer, better known to Newsroom fans as Mackenzie McHale, regales us on the uniqueness of Aaron Sorkin’s writing style in a new interview. Also, Newsroom gains a WGA nomination! Check it all out in our Newsroom roundup.

In an interview for GoldDerby.com, an awards season tracking site, Emily Mortimer sings Aaron Sorkin’s praises calling his writing style, “more like singing than it is acting.” There has been much talk about Aaron Sorkin’s theatre background since The Newsroom hit televisions last June, and this is no departure. Mortimer goes on to say, “He is hugely influenced by musical theater as avid fans may have determined by looking at the show because there are all sorts of references. It’s true that the characters sort of sing at each other. It’s almost like he writes in verse.”

She then goes on to talk more about Mackenzie McHale and her personality quirks, calling them both wonderful and irritating, “[She is] full of conviction at all times and relentlessly sort of optimistic and extremely idealistic. All of those traits are wonderful things, but they can also be deeply irritating and also end in disaster. Being convinced that everything is going to be alright in the end can prepare you for greatness but also for terrible disappointment.” While we love Mackenzie, its nice to know that the woman behind the character can also see the two sides to the eternally optimistic coin. This is just getting us more and more excited for Season 2!

The Newsroom has also recieved its first Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) nomination for Best New Series. The competition will be tough as it is up against the other remarkable new programs The Mindy Project, Veep, Nashville, and Girls, the last of which also earned a nomination for Best Comedy.

We will certainly be crossing our fingers and hoping for a win or two this awards season!

How do you think The Newsroom will fair this awards season? Do you think it could bring home a WGA award? Or maybe grab a few noms down the road at The Golden Globes or the Screen Actor’s Guild?
