Is it do or die for The Muppets tonight? The series is revamped and tonight your familiar friends return with a new twist.

Pizza is coming to The Muppets! Don’t get too excited just yet. Pronounced (PA-chay) the network is giving Up Late with Miss Piggy an image overhaul in tonight’s episode, “Swine Song.” The highly anticipated return of The Muppets did less to inspire nostalgia and more to keep audiences at arm’s length. Tonight’s episode address those concerns in a meta way, but it certainly seems that the notes were taken and employed for the better.

Get ready to welcome back The Muppets with open arms and say hello to the friends you used to know! They may not be hip, but we give them credit for trying. Here are five changes to look forward to when the series returns.

Uncle Deadly steps into the spotlight

Uncle Deadly, the oddest player of the gang to be resurrected, steps out in a big way. Typically seen fussing over Miss Piggy’s wardrobe, constantly rolling her with a lint brush, Uncle Deadly has a few plot lines coming up that are sure to score a few laughs. Be on the lookout for when Miss Piggy introduces him to her new friend, Gloria Estefan the Penguin.

Segments, so many segments

Watch out Carpool Karaoke, Up Late with Miss Piggy is looking to take the most shareable moments away from the late night competition. Up Late with Miss Piggy will not tackle too many special guests for her first shows back; instead, the focus will be on what made the classic so special to begin with — the amazing group of supporting players. While some of the sketches feed into the more modern talk show gimmicks — who will drive unsuspecting people around in an Uber — there are others that will take you right back to the swamp where a story began about a frog and pig.

The guest stars are still plentiful

Joan Jett, Key and Peele, Ian Ziering; the list continues to grow as The Muppets keep adding to their impressive roster of guest stars, which is a staple of the Muppet world and will not change no matter what the network executives or Pizza have to say. Or will it? Tonight’s episode in particular will feature Key and Peele as victims of the network’s schemes.

A new and improved Piggy

One of the biggest complaints about The Muppets’ first string of episodes was that Miss Piggy was too mean. That’s not to say that Miss Piggy was ever the nicest of the Muppet gang, but she was downright unlikable in the revival. Thanks a trip to Argentina, Piggy returns to her show with a fresh attitude and plenty of… ponchos?

You’ll also notice that Kermit is less defeated in tonight’s return. Perhaps all he really needed was that cup of joe in the opening credits!

They’re not hip and that’s what makes them great

The reinvention is quite noticeable in the first episode back, “Swine Song,” but only because they talk about it every few minutes. The tension still lingers between Kermit and Miss Piggy, but it no longer dominates the series. The new rhythm the exes strike in episode 11 continues flawlessly through 12, “A Tale of Two Piggies,” without causing the audience to feel the need to choose a side. One thing you will see more of is the gang running around trying to stay relevant, but falling back on the only thing they know how to do — coming together and make it work without the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood in their favor. That’s where the true joy of The Muppets lay and we’re so glad ABC found it again.

The Muppets season 1, episode 11, “Swine Song,” returns tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
