The series premiere of The Muppets just wrapped on ABC. So, did it live up to expectations?

Welcome to the world of television production! In this version of The Muppets, Kermit and the gang are all working at ABC on Miss Piggy’s late night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy (sorry, Jimmy Kimmel!). The series will document the inner-workings of a TV show akin to The Tonight Show, The Late Show, etc.

The first episode, titled “Pig Girls Don’t Cry,” found Kermit dealing with several of Miss Piggy’s outrageous, diva-like requests on set, including scrapping an upcoming appearance by actress Elizabeth Banks. Her reasons for getting rid of the actress are initially unacceptable to Kermit (she has a “stupid face”). Later we find out she didn’t want Banks on the show because Kermit and the pig broke up before a screening of Pitch Perfect, the film Banks co-stars in. In other words, Miss Piggy has bad memories associated with Banks.

Kermit spent half the episode wondering why his ex was so upset about the actress — apparently he “forgot” this Pitch Perfect-related incident happened. This was one of the weaker points of the episode for us. How could he have forgotten such a big event? Despite this, the emotions we felt during the odd couple’s breakup made up for the misstep.

The green frog also introduced us to his new girlfriend, a pig named Denise who works in the marketing department at ABC. It’s only a matter of time until Miss Piggy and Denise begin to feud! Meanwhile, Fozzie had an awkward dinner with his human girlfriend and her skeptical parents.

Speaking of the relationships on this show, The Muppets clearly offered up some adult-related humor. These sex-related jokes have already angered some of the TV watchdog groups, but we think this type of humor is necessary. This show shouldn’t be geared towards children, and in order for The Muppets to work, it needs to appeal to the big kids (a.k.a adults).

The Muppets series premiere featured celebrity cameos from Elizabeth Banks, Tom Bergeron, and Imagine Dragons. Star appearances are expected to be a major part of The Muppets, so keep an eye out throughout the season.

I enjoyed The Muppets but found it to be a little flat on the humor. So far the storylines the series is “documenting” haven’t felt very compelling, meaning the show may grow tired sooner rather than later. With that said, it’s good, light entertainment, and who can resist the Muppets gang? I’ll be sticking with this one for the time being.

And will you stay with it?
