The Mindy Project announced yesterday via social media platforms and a short, 10-second video that the second half of season 4 will be premiering on Hulu starting on April 12.

This will have been an extended hiatus for the show, taking off from November until April, or about six months.

Last year, The Mindy Project season 4 got a huge 26 episode order. So when the show does return in a few months, there will be 13 episodes, or about three months of new content. Given its late-Spring debut, the show will continue well beyond May’s exodus of season finales and key decision-making events, such as television upfronts. As of right now, the Mindy Project season 4 finale will air on Hulu on June 5.

This Instagram photos from castmember Ike Barinholtz indicates that the season has been in the can for several months by the time they return. We wonder why, then, Hulu has decided to hold off on premiering the rest of the show for so long. One reason could be they want to make room for the recent debut of 11.23.63, the James Franco-starring time travel drama by the same name as its source material written by Stephen King.

A break this long is nearly unprecedented for television networks. ABC typically gives their shows about a three month interlude, and USA Network splits their shows between summer and fall seasons. Regardless, The Mindy Project’s rollout on Hulu has been that of a more traditional show — one episode per week — as compared to Netflix, which dumps you with 13 hours of television and pretty much expects you to watch it in three days.
