Rumors run amok among the doctors, Mindy drops a knife off a fire-escape, and Danny does some dancing. Check out The Mindy Project season 3 premiere recap!

Mindy and Danny are together and they are making up for lost time. It’s not exactly clear if they made their relationship public to the office yet, but judging by the way Danny’s face goes pale when Morgan or Peter mention his mouth skills, we’re going to guess not.

Peter comes to Danny looking for help in the lurve department, but Jeremy pulls them into an all-staff meeting before Danny can scold Peter (or Mindy).

Jeremy and Lauren want to help Shulman & Associates get into more philanthropic endeavors. Enter: Shulman & Associates Cares, a fundraiser that will help raise money for children with bad teeth. Where this room full of staff came from, we have no idea, but we’ll go with it.

After the meeting, Danny pulls Mindy into a supply closet.

Danny: “What are you telling people about me?”
Mindy: “Everything.”

He tells her if they’re going to work out, they can’t be sharing the intimate details of their relationship with the entire office. Peter interrupts, asking Danny to him how to do a “Staten Island Handshake.”

Morgan’s Cousin Lou is helping Mindy fix some things in her office, and is pretty creepy. He inexplicably has a popsicle, while doing work, in one scene and makes everyone feel uncomfortable. Later, while rifling through Danny’s apartment, he (wisely?) points out “you gotta be open with the people you love.” So maybe he’s not all bad?

When Mindy finds a pink thong with ‘Diamond’ encrusted on it in the back of Danny’s dresser, she assumes the worst — he’s hung up on an old ex. Peter points out it is a stripper thong, the way it snaps together. Then Morgan realizes it’s a male thong, and Mindy uncovers one more piece to the Danny Castellano puzzle: Diamond Dan.

We always knew Danny was closed off, uncomfortable when discussing emotions or feelings. When Mindy tries to ask him why, he says he doesn’t trust her with his secrets. But it’s something more than that. Before he can say what he’s thinking, Morgan busts in, calls him “Diamond Dan” and Danny storms out of the room.

Meanwhile, throughout “We’re a Couple Now, Haters,” the suspicion that Lauren and Jeremy were more than friends was running rampant. It started with Danny eyeing Jeremy giving her a back rub in the office late one night. Danny told Mindy, who told Tamra and Morgan, who told Cousin Lou, who went and told Peter at the fundraiser party at Lauren’s apartment.

After confronting her, Lauren says Jeremy just gave her a back rub. And then they kissed. Peter, in a fit of rage, runs out into the party and punches Jeremy’s lights out. Out on the doorsteps, Jeremy wants to see where it could go with Lauren, which is a shame because Peter had been saying how this was the first time he felt real feelings for a girl. He proved he was committed to her by buying her an $8,000 tiara, for goodness sake! They part ways, though, leaving their resolution up in the air (most likely, for episode 2).

These two kids might actually stand a chance…

Out on the fire escape after the disaster of a party, Mindy is eating popcorn and wielding a scary-looking knife. Our laugh-out-loud moment of the episode? When she dropped it off the ledge.

The sincerity between these two is pretty great. Danny opens up and Mindy realizes something:

Danny made a list of his secrets:

  • He was once a stripper and used the money to pay his way through medical school.
  • Then used the savings to pay off his mother’s mortgage.
  • His middle name is Allen, his father’s name, and was too embarrassed by him to tell anyone.
  • When he was in the fourth and fifth grade, his mother couldn’t afford a backpack, so he carried a purse to school.
  •
Mindy: I think the reason that I tell everyone about us is because I want it to be real. The more real it seems, the less likely it is that it could all get taken away from me.

    Danny: It’s real.

Then Danny strips for Mindy to “American Woman” and it’s probably the most hilariously hot scene in the entire series.

All in all, it was a sweet episode. Everyone looks pretty good and ready to take on season 3. For now, we leave you with Diamond Dan.
