What secrets have Mindy and Danny been keeping from each other? Find out in our The Mindy Project season 3, episode 3, “Crimes & Misdemeanors & Ex-BFs” recap.

Mindy and Danny might not be on the same page like they originally thought.

The episode centers largely around the metaphorical boundary Danny has set for Mindy at his apartment. He doesn’t let her keep a toothbrush and hairbrush there, and there is hardly a scant piece of evidence that she exists in his freakishly clean apartment. But there is one sacred item that isn’t too clean: his Yankee Stadium chair. It is the most valuable thing he has — next to Mindy, of course.

We wonder if Danny’s reluctance to let her keep things there is simply his desire to keep things clean and organized, or if it’s a sign of a deeper problem about committing to the relationship.

Turns out, he won’t have to commit to her if she’s in jail for tax evasion. Mindy hasn’t paid her taxes in six years. They might lose the practice because of her indiscretion, sending Danny, Jeremy, Peter and Morgan into a crazy-spiral.

Mindy did look into fixing it once, but the lawyer she hired for the case? Ex-boyfriend Cliff. She goes to ask for his help, but he’s reluctant to do so. Cliff thinks the universe should punish her — why does she get to be with the guy she cheated on him with and get her taxes in order? Mindy catches on quickly, and says she and Danny broke up because Danny cheated on her. He takes the case.

Under the pretense of working on her taxes, Cliff and Mindy meet for dinner. Mindy feels entirely uncomfortable, not wanting to be at such a nice place with a guy who thinks she’s available when really, she is not. After Cliff drops the bombshell that she owes some outrageously large sum to the government, he advises Mindy to get away from the practice. As it turns out, Danny is still married!

Danny storms into Cliff’s office demanding why he told Mindy about his marriage. Turns out, Cliff knew she was lying about being broken up and agrees to help finalize his divorce — for a price. That Yankee Stadium seat we saw for the first time ever tonight? It’s Cliff’s now.

But! In a nice little twist, Cliff is a Red Sox fan and is going to burn the chair. We guess Danny and Mindy kind of deserve that for using him to help Mindy get out of financial trouble. At least Danny is officially divorced and Cliff no longer has delusions about dating Mindy.

By the end of “Crimes & Misdemeanors & Ex-BFs,” Mindy has sorted out the details of her tax problems, even if she does owe the government a ton of money. But more importantly, Danny presents her with an incredible two-drawer dresser/nightstand, painted in a light pink that doesn’t really fit in with Danny’s style, but it’s a symbolic gesture that shows he’s making the effort. Sweet.

Meanwhile…

Peter and Lauren are still together after the season premiere kiss between Lauren and Jeremy, and Peter is willing to forgive her for doing so. Alas, Lauren wants to call it off, leaving Peter heartbroken and kind of vengeful. He calls in an anonymous tip to immigration services and puts Jeremy on a watch list.

In danger of being deported, Jeremy, depressed, confides in Peter that Lauren told him she “wanted to put a pin in it” — the same phrase Peter heard, too. This gives him a little hope, but then Jeremy clears up the immigration problem and Lauren goes running back into his arms, literally. Poor Peter.
