Well, Danny took only seconds to propose to Mindy after finding out she was pregnant, but she instantly shuts him down tonight on The Mindy Project season 3, episode 17, “Lahiri Family Values.”

They were, after all, still in the hospital lounge. But maybe he can try again later? Maybe… The Mindy Project season 3 finale?

Mindy’s maternal side comes out to play (that is to say, viciously take down anyone who dares stand in her way) tonight, when she steps in to course-correct little brother Rishi and Danny tries to break the news to Jeremy and the practice that he’ll be moving to San Francisco.

It’s funny watching these two, OBG/YNs — gynecologists — all-knowing about baby development go absolutely insane once the baby thing happens to them. Danny really thinks “talking” to the baby now, at Mindy’s stomach, in the first trimester, will help its development? And yes, it is still an ‘it’ — it’s still months too early for sex organs to develop. But, it is cute to already see Danny is pumped to have a little Castellano. Mindy is going to have a long gestation period.

Danny thinks a woman’s priority should be her family, but after some consideration, he says he’ll move to San Francisco with her. He professes that the city has been growing on him, he can wear fleece in restaurants! He also easily casts Annette to the side. She might be in New York City, but what’s important now is the baby and Mindy. Oh, how quickly he can change once a baby Castellano is involved.

Mindy, laying down the law to Danny: “A woman can have professional ambitions and still have a family.”

But not so fast — Mindy and Rob have trouble getting a loan for their practice because Mindy’s credit is shot. She blames little brother Rishi, whom she co-signed an apartment lease for in San Fransisco, but is now being evicted.

She offers to hire him as a med tech at her new practice — which would be great, if he wasn’t dealing drugs on the side. It’s great to see the siblings banter — she threatens to tell their parents about his drug dealing, and he threatens to tell them about her pregnancy (she concedes). Rishi, like so many other characters on The Mindy Project pop up once in a while and offer a breath of fresh air for the show.

She tries to get him to quit, but his boss, Big Murder (a.k.a., Greg, a.k.a., John Cho), gives him a raise as incentive to stay. This is just as well, because Rob was not thrilled with hiring her charity case of a little brother. He doesn’t want to build a ‘broken’ practice.

But why does Mindy need Rob to start her own practice, anyway? Conveniently, back in NYC, Cliff’s law firm is moving, leaving plenty of office space empty, just one floor away from Shulman & Associates.

While all this is happening three hours ahead in California, Danny grapples with breaking the news about his move to Jeremy and the rest of the group — even if it may all be for naught.

He also amends his will to include Mindy Lahiri. Morgan overhears Danny saying he doesn’t have much time, and he concludes Danny is dying. They mistake Danny’s sentimentality at a meeting (“You’re great co-workers, and amazing friends.”) as proof he’s got one foot in the graveyard. Instead, he spills the baby-beans and everyone is thrilled.
