The iconic romantic-comedy tropes were out in full force tonight on The Mindy Project season 2 finale. Check out our recap to find out what happened!

It was never a secret that one of Mindy Kaling’s biggest influences was Nora Ephron and her subsequent romantic-comedy movies of the 1980s and 1990s. But the nods to the great movie romances were as prevalent as ever on tonight’s episode of The Mindy Project, “Danny and Mindy.”

The episode starts out reimagining You’ve Got Mail, (or, for a more current reference, Catfish) but by the end we are in full-on Sleepless in Seattle territory – with a touch of complete originality from The Mindy Project.

Anyone who has taken public transportation has imagined what it would be like to strike up conversation with a stranger, but few have been able to experience the feeling of being the subject of a Missed Connection.

One week after ‘eye-banging’ a guy on the subway, Mindy reads, in the missed connections section of the newspaper, a man named Andy looking for an “Indian woman with the voice of a cartoon.” She promises Danny she won’t contact him, but of course, curiosity gets the best of her and she reaches out to him.

Lo and behind: Mindy is the woman he was looking for.

The office realizes she is being emotionally unfaithful to Charlie, whom she’s still dating, but Mindy sees nothing wrong with harmlessly emailing back and forth with this subway man. She does, however, panic when he wants to meet. Mindy admits to “Andy” that she doesn’t have a boyfriend, and agrees to meet him for drinks.

When Mindy thinks she’s emailing Andy though, we realize ‘Andy’ is really Danny. Morgan, in his own special aggressive protection of Mindy, emails Andy late one night in the office. However, he becomes suspicious when Danny’s email notification noise keeps going off.

He puts two and two together and Danny comes clean after Morgan confronts him the next morning.

Danny has to make meeting Mindy ‘the perfect moment,’ and when Tamra points out she’s always talking about the Empire State Building, they hatch a very romantic plan to reveal Andy is really Danny. But it will require him dressing up like Bradley Cooper. We strangely love that Danny doesn’t know who Cooper is, and we find it very in-character.

That evening, Charlie and Mindy amicably split up at dinner after she tells him about Andy. Charlie admittedly doesn’t love Mindy, and gentlemanly bows out of the way and tells her not to let the “rich guy from Staten Island,” you know, “the little one” get in the way, either.

On her way to the New York City landmark, Mindy gets gum caught in her hair and calls Danny for help. Unfortunately, Danny was getting ready to meet Mindy – and cursing Bradley for dressing so dapperly – and can’t raise suspicion.

After throwing on a button-up, inside out, to help her, he tries to get ready in the bathroom while she talks to him through the door.

Mindy genuinely thinks he doesn’t want her and she leaves, feeling better about meeting Andy, but he looks like he was punched in the heart. She arrives at the top of the Empire State Building, only to be left waiting hours as a storm rolls in – Andy has stood her up.

The next morning, Mindy claims to be too sick to come into work. Morgan and Tamra freak out on Danny because how could Andy do that to her? Danny feels guilty and rushes over to her apartment to give her some good ole Castellano TLC: soup and the Guinness Book of World Records.

She begs him to stay and offers to watch anything he’d like. Instead, he picks up When Harry Met Sally and climbs into bed with her. Danny’s voice-over comes in.

They tour New York City together in an incredible montage that should be praised for being both ambitious – so many different locations and outfits, so little time! – and just straight up adorable.

She’s forgotten about Andy, but not for long. When she attacks a grad student from Europe on the subway – whom she thought was Andy – Danny comes clean and she, naturally, flips out on him. She goes storming into the bathroom at the practice in a rage as Danny flies in behind her.

Danny tells her that he loves her, but she doesn’t believe him.

Mindy: “You love me, until you don’t.”

He tries to give her one more shot and says he will wait on the top of the Empire State Building all night if he has to, he will wait for her.

The entire practice bursts into her office at 9:15 pm and tries to convince her to go to him. Peter forcefully drags her by her hair into Danny’s office to show her Danny’s private box. What’s inside but some rosemary beads, a picture of Richie… and her earrings.

When Mindy gets to the Empire State Building, the helpful attendant says the elevators are out of commission and she begins the 104-floor trek up the stairs. While she climbs, everyone else at the practice runs into Danny enjoying a piece of pizza. He waited for an hour for her before giving up, but they convince him to return.

After taking a few laps around the observation deck, Danny finds Mindy passed out on the floor. He crouches down next to her, telling her that he is all in – like gambling – with their relationship. He loves her, and they kiss.

They start discussing how many children they’ll have, Mindy wants nine girls named after all the muses and Danny wants one boy, maximum. But there’s time for that. For now, they continue to kiss while people crowd around them and the season concludes.

Let’s talk about Mindy’s clothes: Who here hasn’t envied some part of Mindy Kaling’s wardrobe on the show? Well, that envy reached new heights tonight when Mindy Lahiri wore twenty-three over the course of 22 minutes. To get a glimpse into how it worked, check out InStyle’s interview with Salvador Perez, the show’s costume designer.
