Prepare yourselves to re-enter The Matrix because a fourth installment of the popular film franchise is officially in the works.

According to Variety,The Matrix 4 is currently in the works with Lana Wachowski set to serve as writer and director on the project.

Wachowski, of course, served as director and writer on the original trilogy along with her sister, Lilly, so it’s great to hear she’ll be coming back for the fourth installment.

As if news of a fourth film weren’t exciting enough, Wachowski isn’t the only familiar face returning. Both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have signed on to reprise their roles from the original trilogy of Neo and Trinity.

As for the role of Morpheus, which was originally portrayed by Laurence Fishbourne, it’s being reported that the studio may be looking to recast someone younger in the part.

Fans itching to know what The Matrix 4 will center on will also have to sit tight as plot details are being kept firmly under wraps for the time being.

In a statement announcing the project however, Wachowski revealed that she’s looking forward to playing with the themes brought up in the original trilogy.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.

Said Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich: “We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary— a singular and original creative filmmaker— and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

There’s currently no word on when we can expect The Matrix 4 to hit theaters, but production on the project is reportedly set to start early in 2020.

For now, fans of The Matrix won’t have to wait long if they’re itching to relive the original films in a big way.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original film, The Matrix is heading back to theaters with special screenings set to be held at select AMC locations beginning August 30.
