The Magicians season 5 trailer shows Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, and Penny navigating in a world without Quentin and with too much magic on the loose.

The Magicians returns after a controversial season 4 finale which saw Quentin Coldwater sacrifice himself to save his friends, magic and the world. The brand new season 5 trailer for The Magicians highlights how his remaining friends — Margo, Eliot, Alice, Julia, Penny, Kady, Fen, Josh, Dean Fogg, and the others — must come to terms with his death and the world without him in it.

On top of that, they must also contend with a brand new threat. Whereas the previous seasons were about the loss of magic, this season flips that dynamic on its head. Now, the balance has tipped the other way and there’s too much magic in the world.

Now the remaining magicians must work without Q to see if they can save the world from an excess of magic and all the doom it brings with it (like the Kraken!).

The Magicians is based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling trilogy of novels and focuses on a group of friends who discover and hone their magical skills, first at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, and then on their own. They wield their magic to fight off the evil creatures aiming to bring this world of magic to destruction.

The show was met with high praise from critics over its first four seasons, and has built a loyal fanbase on SyFy.

The Magicians stars Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran and Trevor Einhorn.

The series is executive produced by John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Chris Fisher and Groundswell Productions’ Michael London and Janice Williams.

The Magicians returns on Jan. 15. SyFy also released a new promo poster, which you can see here.
