The Lovebirds stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a happy couple who find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery.

The couple that solves a murder mystery together…stays together.

Well, at least we hope so.

Paramount has just released the trailer for its upcoming action romcom The Lovebirds, which stars the immensely talented and incredibly funny Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple whose blissful domesticity is interrupted by a body landing on their car, and who must then work to exonerate themselves by solving a murder they didn’t commit.

The Lovebirds looks to be part of the more recent subgenre of romantic comedy action films occupied by movies like the Steve Carell and Tina Fey vehicle Date Night and Game Night starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, wherein ordinary couples are caught up in action movie-esque scenarios involving intrigue, action, and a lot of hilarious fish-out-of-water setups.

Check out the hilarious trailer of The Lovebirds below, followed by the official synopsis!

A couple experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme — and hilarious — circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

The Lovebirds stars Issa Rae as Leilani and Kumail Nanjiani as Jibran, along with Anna Camp, Paul Sparks, Kyle Bornheimer and Moses Storm.

The film reunites Nanjiani with director Michael Showalter, who also directed the actor/comedian in the 2017 romcom hit, The Big Sick for Amazon Studios. The film is based on a screenplay by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, and a story by Abrams, Gall, and Martin Gero.

The Lovebirds will make its world debut at the SXSW Film Festival this March and opens in theaters nationwide on April 3, 2020.
