Instead of premiering in movie theaters as planned, The Lovebirds will start streaming right away.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae’s The Lovebirds on April 3, when it was set to premiere, but you will be able to stream the movie on Netflix before too long! EW is reporting that the rom-com will skip movie theaters in light of current widespread closures and head straight to the streaming service.

The Lovebirds was originally set to premiere at SXSW, which has also been cancelled. It was announced by Paramount last week that the release date would be delayed. We now know that the film will start streaming immediately, rather than beginning with a theatrical release, but there has been no date confirmed for when it will arrive on Netflix.

The movie was directed by Michael Showalter, and features Nanjiana and Rae as a couple on the verge of a breakup who get pulled into a murder mystery. When someone commits a murder with their car, they’re forced to track him down to clear their own names.

This news comes at a time when many movie studios are choosing to release their films on VOD early or postpone the release date rather than premiering to empty theaters. While The Lovebirds is the first movie to move its premiere to a streaming service in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, it likely won’t be the last.
