The X-Files is coming back to Fox with six new episodes, and the infamous Lone Gunmen will be joining Mulder and Scully on their new adventures!

In early 2016, Chris Carter will re-open The X-Files for a six-episode miniseries: Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are back as Scully and Mulder, picking up intriguing new cases more than 10 years after the original series wrapped in 2002.

Among familiar faces who’ll pop up on the new show are the Lone Gunmen, played by Dean Haglund, Tom Braidwood, and Bruce Harwood.

The fan-favorite conspiracy theorists Langly, Frohike, and Byers will appear in at least one episode, reports Televised Revolution; the announcement was made by Dean Haglund at a fan convention in Australia.

“Today they contacted us,” Haglund said. “We’re shooting July 28. The gunmen are in the final six.”

The Lone Gunmen’s ‘X-Files’ fate (spoilers ahead)

During The X-Files‘ original run, the Lone Gunmen were so popular with fans, they got their own spin-off. Unfortunately, due to low ratings, the show was cancelled after only one season.

The news of their return in the miniseries is somewhat baffling, as all three characters had died by the end of The X-Files. They perished tragically in the season 9 episode “Jump the Shark.”

Since they’re only shooting for one day, we have to assume that they’ll be showing up in a flashback or dream sequence, maybe appearing to Mulder as ghosts like they did in the series finale.

Alternatively, we might find out that their deaths were somehow staged — that does sound like something the Gunmen would do!
