New York City subway riders were treated to a surprise performance from the Broadway cast of The Lion King, who broke out into a spontaneous performance of the Disney classic “Circle of Life.”

The Broadway cast of The Lion King took over a New York City subway cart earlier this summer and treated riders to a surprise performance of “Circle of Life.” Though the cast who took part in the surprise serenade originally performed for public transportation users on June 28, video footage of the whole performance was just uploaded to YouTube a few days ago on August 5.

As you can see from the video, passenger reactions ranged from shocked to pleasantly surprised.

This isn’t the first time a cast of The Lion King has treated people to a surprise performance in public. Back in April, the Australian company of the Broadway musical treated Virgin Australia flight members to a little in-flight entertainment where they too broke out into a rendition of “The Circle of Life.” According to the video description that accompanied the footage by DisneyOnBroadway, the Australian cast decided to perform the classic Disney tune to celebrate The Lion King Brisbane season launch announcement.

Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, The Lion King opened its stage production in the summer of 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota before premiering on Broadway in New York City’s New Amsterdam Theater in the fall of 1997. The musical won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1998. Currently, you can catch performance of the Tony Award winning musical eight times a week in Times Square’s Minskoff Theater.
