Everything is awesome for The Lego Movie animation co-director Chris McKay who will direct the highly anticipated sequel.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros has set Chris McKay as the director of The Lego Movie sequel. McKay served as animation co-director on the highly successful The Lego Movie.

It was announced only a few weeks ago that Warner Bros had set a May 26, 2017 release date for the anticipated The Lego Movie sequel. While that release date does seem like a long way off, Warner Bros will want to get working on it early to make sure the quality is comparable to this year’s hit.

The Lego Movie was released on February 7 and has brought in over $225 million at the box office ($361 million worldwide). It has yet to spend a day out of the top five at the box office, a big signifier for the film’s financial success. That will likely be tested this weekend, but as we’re well over a month out that is to be expected.

As for the sequel, it has yet to be decided whether it’ll be The Lego Movie 2 or if it will expand the universe and focus on the popular Lego character Ninjago. We would think that a straight sequel would bring in the most financial success, but hats off to Warner Bros if that’s not their deciding factor.

The Lego Movie directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller will only be returning for the sequel as producers, unfortunately. Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern will be writing the film for now new director McKay.

Before he joined the franchise as animation co-director, McKay was known for directing and animating the popular Adult Swim series Robot Chicken. He is clearly an experienced choice that should take the sequel where Warner Bros wishes.

Is Chris McKay a good choice for ‘The Lego Movie’ sequel?
