A sneak peek from The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 9 suggests that the spirit vines are mad as hell — and they’re not gonna take it anymore.

The home stretch for our favorite animated television show begins this Friday, when The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 9 streams on Nick.com. The episode, titled “Beyond the Wilds,” will kick off the show’s final four episodes with a bang… and a snatch.

A new sneak peek from “Beyond the Wilds” offers a hint at how the story — already fraught with dictators, prison camps, and Korra’s personal demons — will begin to escalate even further.

In the clip from The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 9, hipster airbender Ryu performs his civic duty and leads a tour of Republic City’s Spirit Wilds. Ryu’s doting mother is thrilled at his, er, accomplishments, though he tries to swat away her attentions.

But the tour rapidly takes a turn for the terrifying when a dim-witted reporter sees a spirit vine slithering towards the tour group. “I’m gonna poke it with a stick!” he declares, and disaster really strikes. The reporter, Ryu, and the entire group are wrapped up in vines and whisked away to an unknown fate.

It seems very likely that the spirit vines’ irascibility comes from Kuvira’s attempt to harvest the vines for her spirit bomb. But the vines aren’t discriminating between innocent and guilty humans (or perhaps they just don’t like being a tourist attraction), which means Korra will have yet another hurdle to mount as time runs out on her series.

Co-creator Bryan Konietzko recently promised that “POOP. GETS. REAL.” in the final episodes of the season, and if the clip from “Beyond the Vines” is any indication, he really wasn’t kidding.

The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 9, “Beyond the Wilds,” will begin streaming on Friday, Nov. 28 on Nick.com.
