The Legend of Korra season 3 is out on Blu-ray and DVD, offering a new perspective on Book 3: Change.

The Legend of Korra season 3 is perhaps the most unpredictable – and arguably, the scariest – installment in the four season series. Following the earth-shattering events of Book 2, the world is in a state of transition. Spirits are staking their claim on the human world, and Harmonic Convergence gifted many non-benders with the power of airbending.

But Korra finds herself forced to focus on a deadlier problem. The Red Lotus, an anarchist group composed of four devastatingly powerful benders, has broken free of their prisons. Led by the new airbender Zaheer, the Red Lotus wreaks a path of destruction on their way to the Avatar – and leads to a confrontation that will change Korra forever.

The Legend of Korra season 3 Blu-ray provides a great experience for fans looking to relive the intense third season – or perhaps discover it for the first time. The two-disc set opens with beautiful, moody intro screens, set to an intense refrain of Jeremy Zuckerman’s phenomenal score. The episodes themselves are clear and lovely, paired with excellent sound quality.

As for special features, The Legend of Korra season 3 Blu-ray makes up in depth what it lacks in breadth. The Blu-ray offers two special features: Commentary tracks on all thirteen episodes, and thirteen featurettes titled “The Spirit of an Episode.” (The DVD version provides four of each.)

As with The Legend of Korra‘s previous Blu-ray releases, the commentary tracks are led by co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino. They are accompanied by executive producer Joaqim Dos Santos, and joined in various episodes by directors, producers, and the musical team. The commentaries often stray from the action of the episodes (which may irritate some fans) to discuss the intense and intricate process of production on The Legend of Korra. It is, to steal a phrase, “bitter work,” but with humor, anecdotes, and honesty, Konietzko, DiMartino, and their crew all make it eminently clear how much love and thought is put into every frame of the epic series.

“The Spirit of an Episode” featurettes offer a more in-depth look at the action and production on individual episodes of The Legend of Korra season 3. The five-minute, documentary-style installments feature interviews with the directors and assistant directors of each episode, as well as storyboards, animatics, and production sketches.

These featurettes present background material in a thoughtful, interesting way, and introduce fans to the men and women who spend months guiding each episode to completion. A new feature for The Legend of Korra Blu-rays, “The Spirit of an Episode” documentaries show a fascinating look at production, and a very worthwhile watch for fans looking to go behind the scenes of the series.

Overall, The Legend of Korra season 3 Blu-ray is an excellent presentation of the intricate, emotional Book 3: Change. Introspective and interesting, the Blu-ray edition takes fans right into Nickelodeon’s studios, and easily earns a place on their Avatar shelf.
