The Walking Dead star Steven Yuen will provide the voice for a brand new – and very old – character in The Legend of Korra season 2.

The Legend of Korra season 2 will be joined by The Walking Dead star Steven Yuen, Wired reported today. Yuen will provide the voice for a character called Wan – none other than the very first incarnation of the Avatar spirit.

Yuen will star in two concurrent episodes in The Legend of Korra season 2, set 10,000 years before his spirit was reincarnated as the current Avatar, Korra. Wan, who viewers will meet as a teenaged bender, will try to preserve the balance between the mortal world and the Spirit World; his journey will culminate in his becoming the first Avatar.

Though Wan’s story is necessarily “mythic,” according to co-creator Bryan Konietzko, he is also “human and relatable.” Yuen was chosen for the role of Wan thanks to his “vocal quality and acting” range. Konietzko praised Yuen’s ability to take the character “from an innocent, naïve young man, to a trickster anti-hero, and all the way to a full-fledged action hero.”

This casting, which adds even more depth to the recently announced voice cast for The Legend of Korra season 2, fits perfectly with the themes hinted at in the title of the season – “Book 2: Spirits.” Given recent footage from The Legend of Korra season 2, it seems likely that Korra will face a similar challenge as her predecessor Wan – how to create balance between otherworldly spirits and practicality, both within and without.

News for The Legend of Korra season 2 is bound to explode over the next few days, as San Diego Comic-Con gets into swing! The cast and crew of The Legend of Korra will be holding a panel tomorrow in Ballroom 20, where they will reveal the complete first episode of The Legend of Korra season 2, along with other promised surprises.
