With the Legend of Korra season 2 premiere fast approaching, we look at the top five things we’re expecting when Book 2: Spirits hits our televisions.

Some of our Hypable staffers were lucky enough to see the Legend of Korra season 2 premiere at San Diego Comic-Con, and they put up a recap here. But this writer is going into Book 2 unspoiled, so join me in looking toward the premiere through unspoiled glasses.

Story for Bumi

In the season 1 finale, Tenzin’s brother, Bumi, arrived at Air Temple Island. General Iroh described Bumi, a commander in the United Forces, as “a bit of a wild man, but the bravest commander you’ll ever meet.”

Tenzin seemed chagrined to see Bumi arrive, but his children were thrilled. It seems likely then that we’ll see shenanigans with Bumi and the Airkids. Of course, there’s no way being the fun uncle is going to be the only story for Aang’s oldest son.

The future of Future Industries

The defeat of Amon and the Equalists at the end of season 1 left Asami and her father on opposite sides of the war. It also left Future Industries leaderless, so the logical next step seems to be for Asami to take over the company to which she is the heiress.

Hiroshi Sato’s inventions helped launch an industrial revolution in Republic City, but his side projects also gave the Equalists weapons to fight benders and take over the city, so we’re looking forward to seeing how Asami turns her father’s company, tainted legacy and all, around.

Mako and Korra being coupley

After a season of facing personal drama with family and friends and confronting near-death situations together, Mako and Korra finally got together in the season 1 finale. Now that they are finally on the same page with their feelings for each other, we expect plenty of romantic moments for the couple.

After all, they are teenagers in love.

Korra working to master Airbending

In the season 1 finale, Korra finally tapped into her spiritual side — a season-long struggle for her. After Amon severed Korra’s connection to Water, Fire, and Earth, her desperation allowed her to finally bend Air to protect Mako.

Season 1 opened with Korra passing her Firebending test, indicating that she had mastered three of the four elements. We expect to see a parallel with Korra continuing to hone her Airbending skills in season 2, especially with the connection between Air and the spiritual side of bending.

The introduction of a new big bad

Admittedly, this one doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict. Every story needs a good villain, and with Amon and the Equalists being resoundingly defeated at the end of Book 1, there is an opening for a new baddie.

With the season being titled “Spirits,” there’s it logically follows that the new threat will be related to the spirit world. It is Korra’s duty as Avatar to keep balance between mankind and the spirits, so we expect to see her struggle with that.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, we were introduced to a number spiritual entities, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see someone like Koh or Wan Shi Tong return.

The Legend of Korra season 2 premieres on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 pm on Nickelodeon.
