The voice actor for the titular character in The Legend of Korra spoke about the unique artistic approach taken with season 2’s spirits, and what fans can expect for ships like Makorra.

In speaking with IGN, Varney had a lot of praise for the looks of the spirits in The Legend of Korra season 2, and the outcome of a hotly debated ship, Makorra.

Makorra

Varney had this to say about the troubled teen couple: “I do think that in any kind of situation with this sort of – I can’t believe I’m about to say this – ‘high-powered couple,’ like I’m talking about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes… to have that dynamic happening is going to be challenging for both of them.”

Does this mean that things don’t bode well for Makorra in The Legend of Korra season 2?

Perhaps it does, as she states her feelings toward Asami/Mako shippers: “I do feel tremendous sympathy for her, and I love hearing from the fans about what they wish would happen or who they’re rooting for and who they ‘ship,’ as it’s called.”

Art style of the spirits

In referencing the look of the spirits of The Legend of Korra season 2, she says, “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before! It’s not like a spirit like Ghostbusters, like what a ghost looks like. That’s what a demon looks like.”

Varney continued, “I can’t say that looks like one of the spirits in Spirited Away or one of the ghosts in Poltergeist.” Ironically, we’ve published an article that pointed out the likenesses of The Legend of Korra and the acclaimed Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away.

The spirits look so new, in fact, that Varney was aghast. “We’re living in this world where we have so much media all the time. We have access to imagery all the time,” she explained. “For me to still feel like I’m seeing something brand new, I just think that is mind-blowing.”
