The Leftovers season 1, episode 5, “Gladys,” questions the mission of the Guilty Remnant and how much influence those around them have over their actions.

When a loyal member of the Guilty Remnant is stoned to death in the woods, Kevin begins to feel it is his personal mission to protect them from the violence.

A suspicious suspect: Deep in the woods beyond sight, the woman with the strongest presence out of the entire Guilty Remnant is duct taped to a tree breaking her vow of silence to plea for her life. At the scene of the crime later that night, the GR go in search of their missing friend and report to the police after Laurie finds the body.

Kevin “Find a way to keep me shirtless” Garvey, runs into Aimee who appears to stay over in even less appropriate clothing. With all the break ins occurring, and Kevin’s sudden loss of his shirts, lead him to overcautiously arm the house.

Patti arrives at Kevin’s grief stricken and writes that they lost a member. Across town, Meg begins to speak as if she is one step away from conversion. The reality of their situation does not frighten her, but sparks something within her. Laurie, watching Meg take a cigarette, suffers from a panic attack.

At the site, Patti agrees to stay off the streets due to lacking resources for protection the Maplewood police can provide, much to Kevin’s surprise. Kevin and the hunter, there the night of the attack, are reunited in front of the people who can actually see them! Kevin shows up at Jill’s school and she immediately breaks down demanding to know what happened to her mother. Kevin arrives to tell her that last night a woman was attacked from the GR he wanted her to hear from him before the news spread. As Jill pulls herself together, she tells Kevin, “I shouldn’t have cried, she wouldn’t have cried for me.”

In the hospital, Laurie is treated for a panic attack, and the doctor is concerned about her cigarette intake. Patti waits for Laurie outside and takes her away as the tunes of Hall and Oats plays in the background.

The Curfew: One of Kevin’s detectives calls the Alcohol, Tobacco, Fire Arms, and Cults and reports the case. However, Kevin and Mayor Lucy are on the same page about the feds becoming involved in the case. Lucy agrees to let the town council decide whether a town wide curfew is the best choice for the town as long as his family does not play a role in the decision making. As much as Kevin speaks of separating the two, he stakes out the GR residence that night.

Laurie and Patti take a night off at a motel where Laurie gets her own room to rest up and regain some much needed sleep. Patti meets her in the morning, both in “civilian clothing” and Patti verbally greets her. It has been eight months since Laurie spoke, and Patti suggests she is overdue for a day off.

It’s not us, it’s them: Kevin calls in Reverend Matt as a possible suspect since he was at the receiving end of a rock aimed at the GR. At the end of their meeting, Matt asks to see the body of Gladys, a face that became familiar as she stared right through him.

The town is not over the moon about Kevin’s plan for curfew and it fails to gain the votes needed to pass. The hunter makes his opinion known that ever since he moved to the town he has never felt quiet right and this curfew proposal is making him even more isolated. Without a curfew Kevin takes the safety of the GR into his own hands, showing up with whistles and suggestions for their personal safety.

Patti and Gladys: As it turns out Gladys did have a family, a son who was killed in Yemen. Sometimes releasing the weight will allow you to turn your full attention back to the cause at hand, full emotional shutdown. Patti understands family, truly she does, however their dedication to their mission must be stronger.

Reverend Matt goes with Kevin to see Gladys’ body, but the FBI already signed orders to take the body. Later in the evening the feds call, but there is nothing they can do about the body. However, they offer up a solution, vans of agents, raid the homes and all their problems go away. Kevin turns down the offer. Instead he turns to his old standby, alcohol and taking his aggression out on whomever crosses his path.

Upon their return, Laurie and Patti are greeted by Meg, clad in all white, taken to a vow of silence. Reverend Matt holds an amplified vigil outside the home, let him say goodbye to Gladys for those who cannot. He will speak for those who also understand commitment. The words appear to move Laurie, but she instead forces him to silence with her whistle.

At home that night, Kevin breaks down after telling Jill that he and Laurie are getting a divorce. Meanwhile a few states down, the body of Gladys is sent to the incinerator.

Stray Thoughts:

•Meg has truly taken to her new lifestyle, was this what Laurie was first like?

•Patti breakdown in the restaurant opened the door for a flood of questions.

•The biblical connections are pouring out all over the place.
