The Leftovers‘s is not sort on cryptic characters. This week’s season 1, episode 3 will seek to explain one of the residents of Mapleton, Reverend Matt.

Dwindling attendance at Sunday mass results in the foreclosure of Our Savior Episcopal Church. Reverend Matt Jamison looks to gather funds from the town and save his church. Prior to this week’s episode, Reverend Matt briefly appears around town, preaching his word to the ignorant masses of Mapleton. The only seemingly loyal relationship he has is with the mysterious woman Nora Durnst.

Kevin Garvey believes he is going a bit mad. And why shouldn’t he? The entire police department believes he is making up the dog hunter and his own father fell apart many moons ago.

Meanwhile, viewers gain a glimpse into the life of Nora, the woman whose entire family disappeared, through the stalking efforts of Jill and Aimee (and of course, the Frost twins’ Prius.) The government offers Departure benefits for those who lost loved ones on October 14. Following a 150 intensive interview, people may gain financial allocations. But why is the woman who lost her entire family willing to take on such a duty?

In the clip from this week, the reverend turns to Nora when the church is going under financially. However, his request strikes some reserve in the town mystery.

The residents of Mapleton, as we have seen so far this season, are trying to rebuild their lives the best they can following the Departure. The teachings of the church, especially one claiming that everyone who left was a sinner, may not be what everyone needs.
