Netflix’s The Last Thing He Wanted trailer features Anne Hathaway dealing with family drama and an international crisis all rolled into one.

To say that Anne Hathaway’s character is having a tough time in the trailer for Netflix’s The Last Thing He Wanted is underselling it by a large margin.

We see her investigating an arms deal that winds up leading back to her own father, and then becoming embroiled in an international scandal with far-reaching consequences.

Based on the Joan Didion novel of the same name, The Last Thing He Wanted is a tense political thriller with some impressive names behind and in front of the camera.

Check out the trailer below, followed by the official synopsis!

The Last Thing He Wanted is set against the nebulous milieu of the Iran-Contra scandal. Veteran D.C. journalist Elena McMahon abandons the 1984 campaign trail out of a misguided sense of duty to her father, Dick McMahon. Guilted into running a dangerous fool’s errand on his behalf, Elena leverages the moment to pursue her own investigation but instead gets tipped into the confounding center of the very intrigue she’s trying to expose. Answers turn into questions and wrong turns lead to dead ends in this stylish political thriller as Elena becomes increasingly lost on a map of someone else’s making and the possibility of return — to home and to herself — slowly narrows.

The Last Thing He Wanted stars Anne Hathaway as Elena McMahon, Willem Dafoe as Dick McMahon, Ben Affleck as Treat Morrison, a high-level government official, and Rosie Perez as a confidante and colleague of Elena’s.

The movie is helmed by the talented Dees Rees, who wowed audiences with the fantastic post-war drama Mudbound and the acclaimed indie film Pariah.

The Last Thing He Wanted will premiere at Sundance Film Festival next week before being released globally on Netflix on February 21.
