In 2008, Billy Joel was the final act to play in Shea Stadium. The Last Play at Shea looks at both the musician’s history, as well as the stadiums’ in an entertaining and enthralling way.

The concert was held in 2008 at the now-demolished iconic stadium, but the re-release of the original 2010 film provides a never before seen look into the history of the man and the city.

The documentary, narrated by Alec Baldwin, looks both the origins of Shea Stadium, as well as Billy Joel himself. It details the trials and tribulations both the Mets baseball team has seen, and the struggles Joel went through on his rise to fame. The concert’s performances is interwoven between the interviews, and the shots of the packed stadium never fail to stun on-screen.

The Last Play at Shea was originally released in 2010, but was released last week on Blu-ray with bonus features such as in-depth interviews with Billy Joel and Paul McCartney. The high quality of the Blu-ray makes it both a visually and audibly stunning hour and a half film.

Music fans, from the ’60s to ‘80s to today, will appreciate the variety of tonal changes Billy Joel incorporated into the documentary and concert itself. The show features special guest appearances by Tony Bennett (he duets with Joel on “New York State of Mind”) and John Mayer (who has a killer guitar solo on “This is the Time.”)

If you are not accustomed to Billy Joel music, this is a great film to introduce you to his staples – “Allentown,” and “Only the Good Die Young,” as well as the songs that made less of a slash in the pop culture landscape, but equally incredible tracks, “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway),” “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.” If you’re a die-hard fan, The Last Play at Shea is a fantastic tribute to his work and includes background about many of his songs that only adds to the enjoyment.

As mentioned, this film is not centered solely on Joel, but also incorporates the history of Shea Stadium. For instance, the first major act to perform at the stadium way back in 1965? The original British boy band invasion: The Beatles. Footage from that concert provides a refreshingly new view into Beatlemania, beyond the usual images of their performance on the Ed Sullivan show that are ingrained in today’s pop culture.

In a strange twist of fate, The Beatles influenced Joel from an early age, as he looked up to them and decided to become a musician thanks to them. As he says in the film, “I owe my career and much of my life to the Beatles.” When Joel finishes the concert, he implores Paul McCartney to truly perform the finale, “Let It Be,” as a nice exclamation point for the end of the stadium’s life.

There is much more to be said about the movie, it includes interviews with Billy Joel’s ex-wives, Christie Brinkley, and Katie Lee, his daughter Alexa Ray Joel, and countless collaborators and partners Joel has worked with over the years.

Bonus features include live performances of the songs, and an incredible time lapse of the demolition of Shea Stadium to the slow build of Citi Stadium, the Mets new home base.
